Blackberry: the purple of brambles

Picked from French country brambles at the end of summer, the blackberry hides a rich antioxidant content under its deep purple hue. Its anthocyanins help preserve the skin and revive its radiance, in a wild gourmandise that awakens tired complexions. Born on thorny bushes or on trees, this berry deserves to be distinguished before being invited into a skincare product.

Bramble blackberry or mulberry?

Under the same name hide two very different purple fruits. One climbs on thorny brambles in hedges; the other, a neighbor, grows on a tree. Distinguishing them avoids many confusions when reading an ingredient list or choosing a variety at the market.

Criterion Bramble blackberry Mulberry
Latin name Rubus fruticosus Morus nigra
Plant Bramble, thorny bush of hedges and forest edges Tree cultivated for a long time
INCI name Rubus Fruticosus Fruit Extract Morus Nigra Fruit Extract
Harvest Late summer, from August to September Peak summer season
Direct cousin Raspberry (raspberry bush, Rubus idaeus) Fig (another latex-producing tree fruit)
Dominant profile Anthocyanins and mild acids Anthocyanins and sugars, softer flesh

At NOPAL LIFE, it is this blackberry that inspires us: the cousin of the raspberry bush, born wild on bushes, just as the prickly pear emerges from arid lands.

From picking to care

This berry is hardly cultivated: it is harvested. The thorny bush grows spontaneously along paths and forest edges in temperate regions of France. The season is short — a few weeks at the end of summer — and the berry is picked at perfect maturity, when its purple turns deep black. Unlike calibrated horticultural varieties, it yields flesh saturated with pigments and mild tannins, shaped by the terroir and climate of the year.

For skincare, it is not the entire berry that goes into the formula, but its extract, obtained by maceration and then concentration. It contains, in a stabilized form, the anthocyanins that give this hedgerow delight all its cosmetic interest — the same rustic generosity as the prickly pear, our signature.

Frequently asked questions about cosmetic blackberry

What benefits does blackberry bring to the skin?

Rich in anthocyanins (antioxidant purple pigments) and vitamins, it helps protect the skin from oxidative stress and revive the radiance of dull complexions.

Is bramble blackberry the same as mulberry?

No. Bramble blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) grows on a thorny bush and is harvested at the end of summer; mulberry (Morus nigra) grows on a tree. Both are purple and rich in anthocyanins, but their INCI names differ.

Does blackberry stain the skin?

In a well-formulated treatment, no: its intense color is controlled in the formula. A berry mask is rinsed with water after 5 to 10 minutes of application, leaving no tint.

For which skin types is it indicated?

Dull, tired, and mature skin seeking radiance and antioxidant protection. Its freshness is suitable for most skin types.

What to combine it with?

Raspberry and pomegranate to extend the antioxidant action, prickly pear for evening nourishment. The serum is applied in 2 to 3 drops before the cream.

Composition references based on the Ciqual Table (ANSES, National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety), "Blackberry, raw" sheet. Indicative values for fresh berries.
