Lupin belongs to the legume family (or Fabaceae), the same as peas, beans, or fava beans. There are several hundred species, annual or perennial, recognizable by their long flower stalks — white, blue, yellow, or purple depending on the variety. In cosmetics, it is Lupinus albus, white lupin, that is used: its light seeds concentrate most of the desired compounds.
Like all legumes, this plant fixes nitrogen from the air thanks to the nodules on its roots: it enriches the soil and serves as green manure in many European crops, making it a sustainable raw material to produce. After sowing, flowering occurs in spring and summer, followed by the harvest of seeds in autumn.
