Birch, tree of the northern forests
Birch belongs to the genus Betula, which includes about sixty species of trees and shrubs scattered throughout the Northern Hemisphere — from the woods of Europe to the vast expanses of Russia, and North America. It is a pioneer species: its rapid growth allows it to colonize bare land, often at the forefront of large high forests.
