Recognizing the plant before formulating it

The common nettle grows in dense colonies on nitrogen-rich soils, at the edge of woods and along paths, throughout most of Europe. An adult clump reaches 100 to 150 centimeters. The burning nettle (Urtica urens), on the other hand, rarely exceeds 60 centimeters and flowers earlier in the season. Its flowers, like those of its larger cousin, remain discreet and greenish: these flowers have no cosmetic use. Only the leaves and, more rarely, the roots are relevant here.

What strikes you first are the hairs. Each leaf has thousands of them: fine needles laden with silica, brittle at the slightest touch, which release the compounds responsible for the sting when broken. Neither the siliceous tip nor its contents withstand drying, heat, or maceration. Therefore, no cosmetic raw material — hydrosol, extract, micronized leaf — retains this sting: this is the first thing to know when approaching the plant without apprehension.

In France, cosmetic harvesting focuses on young shoots from wild picking or organic farming, before flowering, between April and June; roots are dug up in autumn. Both species are harvested and extracted in the same way, and the common nettle simply dominates supplies because it yields more material per plant.

Choosing your raw material well

Not all nettle-based raw materials are equal, and the difference is not in the displayed price. Five benchmarks are sufficient: four on the label, one on the calendar.

  1. Cultivation. Prioritize batches from organic farming, harvested in France or elsewhere in Europe, from young leaves. A verifiable label provides information on cultivation — never on the concentration of the finished product.
  2. Manufacturing. Low-temperature drying and gentle extraction preserve the leaf's components. Overheating turns it brown: the quality of an extract can be read from its color as much as from its label.
  3. Packaging. Amber glass, protected from light, significantly extends the shelf life of a hydrosol. For a comparable price, it's better to get a small, well-packaged size than a large transparent bottle that you won't finish in time.
  4. Label. On the INCI list, the order is descending: the earlier the plant appears, the more it is present. It is listed under its international code name, never in French.

A fifth, often overlooked, indicator: the date. A hydrosol keeps for 6 to 12 months after opening, but this counter is only meaningful if the bottle hasn't already spent two years in a warehouse. A serious raw material should bear its harvest or distillation year, not just a distant expiration date.

What the leaf contains

Synthesis work dedicated to the Urtica genus describes an unusually dense leaf: minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron), silicon, flavonoids such as quercetin and rutin, chlorophyll, and carotenoids. It is these combined components, rather than a single star molecule, that make the extract cosmetically interesting — a complete plant profile rather than an isolated active ingredient.

From a regulatory standpoint, the European Commission's CosIng database lists two declared functions for the leaf extract: skin conditioning and tonic. It is therefore an ingredient for comfort and freshness, whose use falls under daily care and not a therapeutic promise.

Allow to dry
45 seconds in the open air. The lotion must be absorbed before the next step, otherwise the oil will slide off.

Nourish cheeks

Nettle, green clay, or rosemary: which one tonight?

Three ways to address a T-zone, three rhythms not to be confused. Combining them on the same evening is the primary cause of discomfort.

What this table truly says: the difference between these three ingredients is not a question of potency, but of contact time. Clay is applied and removed, which allows for only once a week; nettle lotion and rosemary hydrosol remain on the skin, hence alternation rather than accumulation. In practice, you pick one for the week and stick to it: the remaining evenings do perfectly well without a purifying active, and that's intentional.

Four usage mistakes to avoid

  1. Applying lotion to an uncleaned face. The day's film acts as a barrier; step 1 of the ritual is not optional.
  2. Accumulating purifying active ingredients on the same evening. Nettle, clay, and exfoliating acid take turns — they do not add up.
  3. Confusing micronized leaf powder and dry extract. These are two distinct materials, not two names for the same thing: whole leaf powder is dosed at 1 to 3%, while dry extract, which is much more concentrated, is dosed at 0.5 to 2% — and it colors the formula green starting from 1%.
  4. Forgetting an opened bottle. A hydrosol kept in an amber bottle, in a cool, dark place, lasts 6 to 12 months; a homemade preservative-free lotion lasts 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator.

Does nettle sting in cosmetics?

No: this stinging entirely disappears upon drying or extraction. A hydrosol, micronized leaf, or glycerinated extract dosed at 2 to 5% does not sting — only its mineral richness remains.

What skin types is it recommended for?

Mixed to oily skin, on the T-zone, at a rate of 2 applications per week, never two days in a row. For sensitive or reactive skin, first test for 24 hours in the crease of the elbow.

Stinging nettle or burning nettle?

Both species are harvested and extracted in the same way, and their extracts are considered equivalent in cosmetics. Burning nettle is simply smaller and earlier, so less profitable to harvest.

Green clay as a mask once a week (10 minutes application), rosemary at 1 to 3% alternating, and prickly pear oil at 3 to 4 drops in the evening on the cheeks. On the scalp, horsetail — another silicon-rich plant — plays a similar role and is alternated in the same way.
