Babassu: melting freshness

Extracted from the kernel of an Amazonian palm tree, babassu is a solid oil-butter at room temperature that melts as soon as it touches the skin. Rich in fatty acids and yet remarkably light, it nourishes without a greasy effect, softens the skin texture and leaves a silky touch, with that characteristic freshness that distinguishes it from other vegetable butters.

From the Amazonian palm to the golden kernel

A forest oil, harvested and pressed with care.

Babassu (INCI Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil) comes from a large palm tree found in the forests of Brazil, particularly in the Maranhão region. Its fruits contain very hard nuts; inside are small kernels rich in fatty matter. These kernels are traditionally cracked by hand by local women gatherers, a rural sector that makes this oil a sustainable and emblematic resource of the region.

The seeds are cold-pressed, without solvents: this first pressing preserves the fineness of the material and gives it its pale, almost white color, in its solid state. Composed mainly of saturated fatty acids, it resists oxidation well and offers excellent preservation over time – a valuable asset for a 100% natural ingredient.

Long a local treasure, this ingredient is at the heart of a rural industry: in northeastern Brazil, generations of women have made soaps, butters, and skincare products from it. Its cosmetic benefits are now recognized worldwide, supported by a sustainable raw material derived from respectful harvesting. It is delicately used in artisanal soap making as well as in gentle facial care, and it is incorporated into many daily beauty rituals.

What babassu contains

A fatty acid profile that explains its melting and light texture.

Babassu's unique properties come from its fatty acids: it is dominated by lauric acid (about 40 to 50%), along with myristic acid (about 15 to 20%) and a more modest amount of oleic acid. These short, saturated chains explain its melting point, which is close to body temperature—hence the instant transition from solid to liquid upon contact with the skin—and its dry, never heavy feel.

How to choose and store it

Some pointers to recognize good quality.

Opt for a virgin version, obtained by simple pressing and unrefined: this guarantees a fine material, with a subtle fragrance and preserved quality. A good product is recognizable by its light color and its clean melting point around 24 °C. Store it away from light and heat; its richness in saturated acids ensures excellent stability over the months, winter and summer alike.

In cosmetics, this material is used in balms, rich serums, makeup removers, or soap preparations. It provides suppleness, a subtle glow, and a true sensorial experience without ever weighing down the complexion.
