Vitamin C or bakuchiol: which is right for your skin?

They do not aim for the same goal, despite a common anti-aging reputation. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that works on radiance, spots, and protection against free radicals. Bakuchiol is a plant extract studied as an alternative to retinol, for wrinkles and texture.

What distinguishes them

Criterion Vitamin C Bakuchiol
Origin synthesis or stabilized derivatives Psoralea corylifolia seeds
Focus radiance, spots, complexion wrinkles, texture, firmness
Timing morning morning or evening
Tolerance good, sometimes tingling very good
Sensitive skin yes, in stabilized derivative yes, that's its asset
Timeframe 4 to 8 weeks 2 to 3 months

What is bakuchiol

It is a compound extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant long used in traditional medicine. In cosmetics, it is presented as an alternative to retinol.

Available studies report comparable effects on wrinkles and texture, with significantly better tolerance: no initial flaking, no photosensitivity. The track record is still more limited than that of retinol, whose effectiveness has been documented for decades.

It is not a retinoid and does not act by exactly the same mechanism, even if the observed results are similar. This is a nuance worth knowing before purchasing.

What vitamin C does

It neutralizes some of the free radicals generated by exposure and pollution, which justifies its use in the morning. It also acts on dark spots and skin tone uniformity, and is involved in collagen production.

Its weakness is its stability: pure ascorbic acid oxidizes quickly on contact with air. A serum that has turned orange has lost most of its benefit. Stabilized derivatives are more reliable, gentler, and act more slowly.

Which one to choose

Dull complexion, spots, lack of radiance: vitamin C, the only one of the two in this area.

Wrinkles, irregular texture, skin lacking firmness: bakuchiol.

Sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinol: bakuchiol, which is precisely its main selling point.

Limited budget, only one product: vitamin C, whose effect is more quickly noticeable.

Why they complement each other well

They do not overlap. One protects and brightens, the other works on the surface structure. Their combination therefore covers the two main families of signs of aging.

And unlike retinol, bakuchiol does not require any particular precautions for cohabitation. You can use them on the same morning without risk of cumulative irritation.

The protocol

In the morning: vitamin C serum on clean skin, wait one minute, then bakuchiol if your formula allows, a cream, and sun protection.

Or more simply: vitamin C in the morning, bakuchiol in the evening. This is the clearest organization, and it allows each to be judged separately.

For reactive skin, prefer this second option for the first few weeks.

On sensitive skin

This is where bakuchiol makes perfect sense. Where retinol imposes several weeks of redness and flaking, it introduces itself without an adaptation period.

For vitamin C, choose a stabilized derivative rather than pure ascorbic acid: tolerance is much better, at the cost of slower action.

Texture and formula matter

Bakuchiol is oil-soluble and is often found in oils or oil-based serums, at concentrations of 0.5 to 2%. Vitamin C is water-soluble and comes in aqueous serum.

If you use both in the same routine, the aqueous therefore goes before the oil-based — the usual rule applies without surprise.

What not to expect

Neither one nor the other erases an established deep wrinkle. Bakuchiol improves the texture and appearance of fine lines; vitamin C improves radiance and skin tone uniformity.

For signs of aging, daily sun protection remains the most effective gesture. Actives are complementary, never a replacement.

Limitations

These products are cosmetics: they act on the appearance of the skin without treating any condition. In case of doubt during pregnancy or breastfeeding, seek professional medical advice.

Spots or wrinkles: the question to ask

Bakuchiol aims to improve the appearance of wrinkles, vitamin C the uniformity of the complexion. These are not two levels of the same objective but two distinct objectives. If it's marks and spots that bother you, a vitamin C radiance serum is what you need in the morning.
