Combining aloe vera and bakuchiol: gently incorporating an active ingredient

The problem with an active ingredient is not its power, it's how to introduce it. Bakuchiol requires a gradual ramp-up; aloe vera gel makes this ramp-up tolerable for sensitive skin.

What Bakuchiol Is

A compound extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant from South Asia. It is often presented as a natural alternative to retinol: the comparison concerns the observed effects, not the chemistry, as the two molecules are not related.

Available studies describe an action on the appearance of wrinkles and on skin tone homogeneity, with significantly better tolerance than vitamin A. It is this tolerance that explains its place in skincare for sensitive skin.

The Introduction Schedule

Weeks one and two: every third night. Weeks three and four: every other night. Then, daily if nothing protests. Aloe vera gel, on the other hand, should be applied every day from the first, including nights without the active ingredient.

This progression seems slow and saves time. A too-rapid ramp-up produces a phase of discomfort that almost always leads to abandonment, and an active ingredient abandoned after a month yields no results at all.

In What Order to Apply

Bakuchiol serum first, on clean, dry skin. Aloe vera gel next. This order is not negotiable: an aqueous layer applied before the active ingredient dilutes it and reduces its penetration.

On reactive skin, you can intentionally reverse the order during the first few weeks. Penetration decreases, comfort increases, and this is a worthwhile trade-off for someone who has already given up on an active ingredient once.

What Aloe Vera Actually Provides

It hydrates the surface and provides an immediate soothing sensation. It does not reduce the action of bakuchiol nor enhance it: its role is to make the adaptation period comfortable, which is already a lot.

This gel is composed of over ninety-eight percent water, with polysaccharides that form a hydrophilic film. Its effect lasts for a few hours, and a cream over it significantly prolongs it.

Timelines and Limitations

Eight to twelve weeks to observe a change in skin texture, longer for skin tone. None of this replaces sun protection, which remains the only action addressing the main cause of visible aging.

An active ingredient of this type should not be combined with an acid on the same night. Alternate nights, without exception, to avoid subjecting a barrier that cannot handle two solicitations at once.
