Vitamin C or sea buckthorn: which one for which need

Both are sold for radiance, and that is indeed their only common point. Vitamin C is water-soluble and degrades quickly; sea buckthorn oil is fat-soluble and stable. The initial choice is not based on performance but on tolerance.

Two opposing ways to act on the complexion

Vitamin C, in its active form of ascorbic acid, is water-soluble and works at an acidic pH. It acts on complexion uniformity and the appearance of spots, with solid evidence, provided it is correctly formulated and stored.

Sea buckthorn oil is a completely different thing: an oil rich in fatty acids, including a rare omega-7 profile, and strongly colored by its carotenoids. It brings suppleness, comfort, and a brighter complexion—by nourishing the surface, not by a targeted action on pigmentation.

In other words, vitamin C corrects, sea buckthorn nourishes. The radiance obtained does not have the same origin, and it is not seen in the same place.

The paradox of sea buckthorn, which you need to know before choosing

Sea buckthorn, Hippophae rhamnoides by its botanical name, is a thorny shrub found on coastlines and mountains whose orange berries are reputed to be among the richest fruits in vitamin C in the plant world—several times the content of a citrus fruit by equal weight.

This is precisely what makes the comparison tricky. The benefits of sea buckthorn that are widely advertised mix two very different things: the whole berries, and the oil extracted from them. However, vitamin C is water-soluble: it remains in the pulp and juice, and hardly passes into the oil.

Sea buckthorn oil is therefore not a source of applied vitamin C. What it contains are essential fatty acids—including that famous omega-7 rare in the plant kingdom—and carotenoids, mainly beta-carotene, responsible for its strong color. Its cosmetic properties come from there, and nothing else.

Choosing between the two is therefore never choosing between "two vitamin Cs," contrary to what many comparisons suggest. These are two distinct applications, one aqueous and targeted, the other oily and nourishing.

What the berries provide, and what is beyond the scope

Sea buckthorn berries are consumed as juice, syrup, and jam throughout Northern Europe, and most of their reputation comes from these food uses. These issues fall under diet and competent advice, not cosmetics: they say nothing about what an applied oil can do.

In skincare, only the oil matters, and it is evaluated on simple criteria: a strong color rather than a pale tint, cold-pressed, opaque packaging. An Hippophae rhamnoides oil obtained from the pulp is more colored and richer in carotenoids than that from the seeds, which is naturally lighter.

The shrub grows in Central Asia as well as on European coasts, and its berries also concentrate minerals and flavonoids, compounds partially found in the oil. These compounds contribute to its cosmetic interest: when applied, they help protect the skin surface and slightly improve the comfort of exposed skin, thanks to their antioxidant action. This is a real contribution, provided it is not credited with more.

Tolerance, the true starting criterion

This is where the choice really comes into play. Vitamin C at effective concentrations can tingle, sometimes redden reactive skin, and does not tolerate being combined with other acids on the same morning. Sensitive skin often gives up on it before seeing the benefit.

Sea buckthorn poses none of these problems. It is a well-tolerated vegetable oil, with no build-up, no incompatibilities, usable on fragile skin. It is the reasonable option when vitamin C has already been tried and poorly tolerated.

Its disadvantage lies elsewhere: the color. A strong orange that can temporarily tint very fair skin and stain light textiles. Two drops are enough, diluted in a cream if necessary.

What stability says

Pure vitamin C oxidizes in light, air, and heat. A serum that turns dark yellow then orange has lost some of its interest—it's not dangerous, it's just less active. Opaque bottle, airtight pump, use within a few months.

Sea buckthorn oil is significantly more stable, but remains an oil: stored away from light, it lasts six to twelve months after opening, and a change in smell indicates it should be discarded.

For what need, precisely

Spots, uneven complexion, old marks: vitamin C, in the morning, under sun protection. This is the best-documented indication of the two.

Dry skin, dull from lack of oil, rough to the touch: sea buckthorn, in the evening, at the end of the routine.

Sensitive or reactive skin that does not tolerate active ingredients: sea buckthorn, without hesitation.

Skin exposed to sun and pollution: vitamin C in the morning for its antioxidant role, in addition to sunscreen—never as a replacement.

Can both be used?

Yes, and it is even a coherent combination, provided they are separated during the day. Vitamin C in the morning, in its aqueous phase, under cream. Sea buckthorn in the evening, as the last layer, on clean skin.

Mixing them in the same application provides no benefit: the oil hinders the penetration of the acidic serum, and the benefit of each is diluted. Our vitamin C radiance serum takes pride of place, and the sea buckthorn page details the second.

In summary

Vitamin C to correct an uneven complexion, sea buckthorn to nourish and soothe. If your skin tolerates the former, it has the best level of evidence; if it does not tolerate it, sea buckthorn is not a consolation prize but another answer. The pages vitamin C: what concentration and sea buckthorn: myth or real effect complement each of the two.
