Vitamin C or argan oil: which one for your skin?

They do not address the same need. Vitamin C is an active ingredient that works on radiance, dark spots, and protection against free radicals. Argan oil is a fatty substance that nourishes and limits water loss. One corrects, the other maintains.

What separates them

Criteria Vitamin C Argan Oil
Nature Antioxidant active Vegetable oil
Phase Aqueous Oil
Target Dull complexion, dark spots Dry skin, hair
Application Serum, early Last step
Benefits Targeted action Fatty acids, antioxidants
Stability Fragile Good

What argan oil contains

Extracted from the fruit of the argan tree, argan oil is dominated by oleic acid and linoleic acid, the latter being an essential fatty acid that the skin does not produce. It also contains tocopherols and natural antioxidant compounds.

This composition explains its dual use: on the skin, it nourishes and softens; on the hair, it tames and adds shine. It is traditionally used for both.

Quality argan oil is recognized by its "first cold press" mention, its tinted glass bottle, and its characteristic vegetable scent. An odorless oil has probably been deodorized, which removes some of the useful compounds.

What vitamin C does

It neutralizes some of the free radicals produced by exposure and pollution, acts on dark spots and skin tone uniformity, and is involved in collagen production.

Its use in the morning makes sense: this is when the skin faces the aggressions it protects against. Its weakness is its stability, as ascorbic acid quickly oxidizes on contact with air.

Which one to choose

Dull complexion, dark spots, irregularities: Vitamin C, without hesitation. Argan oil will not act on this concern.

Dry, rough, inelastic skin: Argan oil, whose fatty acid content is exactly what is missing.

Dry hair, damaged ends: Argan oil, which has no equivalent here.

Normal skin, no specific concern: Argan oil for maintenance, and Vitamin C if you want to improve skin tone.

Using them together

This is the best option, and the order is that of any layering: aqueous before oily.

1. Gentle cleansing.

2. Vitamin C serum on clean skin.

3. Wait one minute.

4. Two to three drops of argan oil, warmed between the palms, applied by pressing.

An oil applied before the active ingredient would form a barrier that would hinder its penetration. This is the only real mistake to avoid.

Application on skin and hair

On the face, two to three drops are sufficient. For the eye contour, just one, dabbed with the tip of the ring finger.

On hair, the usage differs: one drop on dry ends after drying, or a more generous amount as a pre-shampoo mask. In both cases, avoid the roots.

Argan or prickly pear?

The question often arises, as both oils come from trees and cacti in the same arid regions. Their difference lies in their profile: argan oil is richer in oleic acid, while prickly pear seed oil is significantly richer in linoleic acid and tocopherols.

In practice, argan is a little more occlusive, while prickly pear is finer and better suited for combination skin. The price difference mainly reflects their respective yields.

On antioxidants: do not confuse the categories

Argan oil contains natural antioxidants, but they work in the oil phase and primarily serve to protect the oil itself from rancidity. Their action on the skin is real but much more modest than that of a vitamin C serum.

In other words, an antioxidant-rich oil does not replace an active antioxidant. The two categories complement each other.

Argania spinosa: the tree and its oil

The argan tree, Argania spinosa, grows mainly in southwestern Morocco, in arid lands where few species thrive. Its fruits contain a hard kernel from which the kernels are extracted, then the oil.

There are two versions: a cosmetic oil, obtained from unroasted kernels, and a nutty-flavored food oil, derived from roasted kernels. The consumption of this second version is common locally, but it is not applied to the skin.

Its content of useful compounds

Its content of linoleic acid and tocopherols is what gives it its reputation. It also contains sterols, present in small quantities and regularly highlighted for their soothing role.

These compounds help strengthen the skin barrier by providing materials that the skin uses. This is a slow and indirect action, not to be confused with that of a targeted active ingredient.

On skin and hair

Argan oil is also used on hair, where it tames lengths and adds shine. One drop on the ends after drying is enough; as a pre-shampoo mask, a more generous amount.

On the face, two to three drops as the last step. On the body, after showering, on still damp skin—this is when it retains moisture best.

Prevent rather than correct

The two products do not address the same timeframe. Vitamin C corrects what is already there: dark spots, uneven skin tone. The oil maintains and prevents, keeping the skin barrier nourished and supple.

This is why it is rarely relevant to oppose them. A complete routine does both, and maintenance is always less expensive than correction.

What to keep in mind

These two products are cosmetics. They improve the suppleness, comfort, and appearance of the skin, without treating anything. A persistent irritation warrants a dermatologist's opinion rather than a brand change.

For dry skin, both are justified

Argan oil nourishes, Vitamin C evens out: opposed, they don't address the same complaint. Dry skin with dark spots needs both, a Vitamin C serum in the morning and argan in the evening.
