Plant-derived spermidine: antioxidant shield and radiance

Spermidine is a molecule naturally present in our cells, and its presence decreases with age. This polyamine, also found in wheat germ, is associated with autophagy (cellular "spring cleaning") and has antioxidant properties. What is spermidine?

Autophagy, the cell's spring cleaning

The word "autophagy" literally means "self-eating." It is the mechanism by which a cell identifies its worn or altered components, recycles them, and gets rid of them — a true internal cleansing that helps keep the cell young and functional. This process, whose discovery was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2016, has a peculiarity: it slows down with age.

When autophagy weakens, cells accumulate waste and oxidized components. At the skin level, this can result in a loss of radiance, suppleness, and natural renewal capacity. By supporting this mechanism, spermidine helps the skin maintain its youthful appearance.

Spermidine and oxidative stress: a dual defense

Oxidative stress — generated by UV, pollution, or fatigue — produces free radicals that oxidize skin lipids and proteins. Spermidine acts on two complementary fronts:

— as an antioxidant, it helps neutralize some of these free radicals and protect against external aggressions;
— by supporting autophagy, it helps the cell eliminate components already altered by oxidation.

It is this dual action, both preventive and supportive, that distinguishes spermidine from classic antioxidants.

What we observe with spermidine

Interest in topical spermidine is recent but promising.

Skin structure and barrier. It is observed that spermidine is associated with the appearance of dermal structure and the comfort of barrier function, with an improved appearance of firmness and suppleness, as well as support for skin lipids in mature skin.;
Antioxidant activity. Cosmetic research suggests antioxidant activity of spermidine, especially in stabilized form.;
Skin comfort. Applied to the skin, spermidine is known to help improve complexion. .
