What retinol does
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, the active ingredient whose action on the signs of aging is the best documented. It accelerates the renewal of surface cells and supports the production of collagen.
Its results include established wrinkles, skin texture, and pore appearance. Allow three to six months of regular use before judging: it's a slow-acting treatment.
Its counterpart is initial irritation—redness, flaking, increased skin sensitivity—which lasts a few weeks if you progress slowly.
What salicylic acid does
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid, and its particularity lies in its fat-soluble nature. Unlike alpha-hydroxy acids, it penetrates sebum and acts inside the pore.
This affinity for oily areas makes it the reference active ingredient for acne-prone skin and visible pores. Salicylic acid unclogs pores, and the effect is noticeable within two to four weeks.
On the other hand, it dries out the skin and also increases sensitivity to radiation. Too frequent use can backfire.
Which one to choose
Clogged pores, blackheads, acne-prone skin: salicylic acid, unparalleled.
Wrinkles, general texture, signs of aging: retinol.
Both concerns at once: both active ingredients, used on separate evenings.
Dry or reactive skin: retinol alone, as salicylic acid is drying.
The separation that solves everything
Do not apply them on the same evening. Two demanding active ingredients in the same application multiply the risk of irritation without multiplying the benefit.
A simple routine works well: salicylic acid two evenings a week, retinol on the other evenings, and a cream alone at least one evening out of seven.
This last evening is as important as the others. It's when the skin recovers from what has been asked of it.
Targeted use
Salicylic acid does not need to be applied everywhere. On combination skin, the T-zone is sufficient—forehead, nose, chin—and the rest of the face is spared.
This localized use often allows both active ingredients to be used without the skin protesting. It's the first adjustment to try when tolerance becomes difficult.
Useful concentrations
For salicylic acid, 0.5 to 2%. Beyond that, it leaves the realm of daily care. A cleanser containing it stays on the skin for a short time and therefore acts less than a serum.
For retinol, 0.1 to 0.3% at the start, then 0.5 to 1%. A mention without a number does not allow any comparison, regardless of the price.
Progression
Start with only one of the two for a month. Then introduce the second, once a week, and increase in increments of two weeks.
Introducing both in the same week makes it impossible to attribute a reaction to the correct product. This is the most common and easiest mistake to avoid.
What makes the whole tolerable
A ceramide-rich cream, every day, morning and evening. These two active ingredients stress the outer layer of the skin; you must give back what you take.
A humectant like hyaluronic acid, applied to damp skin, is a useful complement. Neither retinol nor salicylic acid provide water.
Sun, for both
Both active ingredients increase sensitivity to ultraviolet light, which is rare: most combinations only accumulate this drawback on one side. Daily sun protection is non-negotiable here.
Without it, you get the opposite of the desired result on both texture and marks.
On sensitive skin
Sensitive skin poorly tolerates both active ingredients at once. Starting with retinol alone, at a low concentration, allows assessing skin tolerance without confusing the causes.
If redness appears, space out applications before giving up. Reducing to one evening a week is often enough, and is better than a complete stop followed by too rapid a resumption.
Fine lines and texture
For surface fine lines, retinol shows visible effects after three months. Salicylic acid does not act on them: it works on pores and skin texture, which is another matter.
This distinction avoids many disappointments. Expecting an exfoliant to reduce fine lines is like using the wrong product, no matter how good it is.
Read the ingredients
Ingredients are listed in descending order of quantity. An active ingredient listed after preservatives is present in too small a quantity to produce effects.
Exfoliants are recognized by the mention acid in the international list. Seeing several powerful exfoliants in the same formula is a warning sign, not a sign of quality.
Hydration, the forgotten part
These two active ingredients take from the outer skin layer what must be returned to it. A cream, every day, is part of the routine just like them.
A humectant like hyaluronic acid, on damp skin, further improves the hydration obtained. It's the most cost-effective and most often neglected addition.
Final word
These products are cosmetics and improve the appearance of the skin. Acne that leaves marks or resists these treatments should be addressed by a dermatologist, and retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
