What a peptide is
A short chain of amino acids, between two and fifty. Skin proteins — collagen, elastin, keratin — are made of them. The idea in cosmetics is to use these fragments as signals rather than as materials.
On a label, they are recognizable by their name: a fatty acid as a prefix — palmitoyl, myristoyl — followed by the number of amino acids, tripeptide, tetrapeptide, hexapeptide. The final digit is a serial number, not a measure of potency.
What the data allows us to say
Available studies describe an improvement in skin appearance after eight to twelve weeks, in terms of apparent firmness and texture. Sample sizes are small, and a large part of the invoked mechanisms come from **cellular models**, not from facial trials.
This is an honest level of evidence: a well-documented lead in the lab, not an established clinical result. Retinol, on the other hand, has decades of clinical studies — the comparison is not equal, and perhaps never will be.
Why they still apply
Because they impose nothing. No tolerance threshold, no adaptation period, no sun restrictions, no known incompatibilities. For skin that has already given up on a retinoid, it's the only viable anti-aging path.
And they combine with everything: hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, panthenol. Few active ingredients can say the same, and this flexibility has a practical value that efficacy comparisons ignore.
Twice a day, and why
Their described action relies on repeated contact rather than high concentration at a given moment. Study protocols generally involve two daily applications — it is consistent to follow this regimen.
The serum is applied to clean skin, before cream: they are water-soluble and penetrate better before any lipid phase. Morning and evening, without special precautions.
What not to expect from them
Nothing on established wrinkles, nothing on spots, nothing on pore diameter. Nothing immediate either: two to three months before a change is visible, and it will be modest.

So, myth or real effect

What the studies describe relates to appearance: a more even texture, perceived improved skin elasticity after two to three months. Skin aging, however, occurs at depths where nothing we apply reaches in useful quantities.
This limitation applies to all cosmetics. What distinguishes peptides is their tolerance: they can be used without ramp-up and without sun restrictions, which makes them sustainable in the long term where a strong active ingredient is abandoned.
Their place in a routine
After cleansing, before moisturizing cream. They combine easily with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which strengthen the skin barrier while they work on the surface. Regular use, twice a day, yields more than a high concentration used intermittently.
For sensitive skin, it's one of the few anti-aging ingredients that can be introduced from day one. It's a discreet role, and it's theirs.
