A strain of Bifidobacterium — a bacterium naturally present, notably, in the human gut microbiota — is cultivated. It is fermented, then the cells are "broken" (lysis) to release their contents: cell wall fragments, peptides, metabolites, nucleic acids. The result is an inactivated active ingredient, without viable bacteria.

This is a major difference from a classic probiotic. Where a live bacterium would pose questions of stability and preservation in a cosmetic, the lysate delivers bacterial "messages" without the living organism. This is why it's called a postbiotic. Why bifidus for the skin barrier?

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the epidermis, the one that retains water inside and keeps aggressors out. When it is weakened, the skin feels tight, becomes rough, and reacts to the slightest stimulus. This is precisely the territory of so-called reactive skin.

The interest in bifidus lysates lies in their supposed ability to support this barrier rather than merely mask its issues. Several studies suggest that they promote the expression of structural proteins in the epidermis — those that ensure the cohesion of surface cells. The idea is not to "repair" the skin (cosmetics don't do that) but to accompany its natural defense and cohesion mechanisms, so that it can better withstand cold, wind, pollution, or an overly stripping cleanser.

Let's be precise about the level of evidence, because this is where many communications go astray.

The most cited study is by Guéniche and colleagues, published in Experimental Dermatology in 2010. It is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted on 66 women with reactive skin. For two months, half applied a cream containing 10% Bifidobacterium longum extract, the other a placebo. Researchers observed, in the active group, a decrease in skin dryness after 29 days and better barrier resistance to physical aggressions (measured by the number of strippings — successive tape removals — needed to disrupt it). This is a solid clinical result, but on a modest sample size and with a single strain: it illuminates a path, it does not establish a universal promise.

Regarding mechanisms, a study by Wang and collaborators published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2023 worked in vitro on keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). It reported that bifida ferment lysate stimulates the expression of genes associated with the skin's physical barrier — including filaggrin (FLG), loricrin (LOR), and involucrin (IVL) — as well as genes for natural defense peptides (CAMP, hBD-2). This data is valuable for understanding how the active ingredient might work, but it remains in the laboratory: a result on cells does not automatically translate to your face.

What to remember:

The "microbiome" angle deserves clarification. A bifidus lysate does not inoculate your skin with bifidobacteria — there are no live bacteria. Its role is rather in the dialogue between the skin and its resident flora.
