Does drinking enough water really help your skin? What internal hydration does (and doesn't do) for skin comfort, and how to supplement it with skincare.

Misleading, because no amount of water will magically appear on your face and stay there. Two types of hydration that should no longer be confused

Half of the disappointment comes from a misunderstanding of vocabulary: the same word describes two realities that do not follow the same rules.

Internal hydration refers to the body's overall intake, through drinks and food. This fluid circulates, participates in nutrient transport and thermoregulation, and irrigates all tissues through the deep layers. It is continuously renewed: we lose some every day through respiration, perspiration, and urine. The loss is physiological and permanent; intake only compensates for it.

Skin hydration refers to the water content of the superficial layers and, most importantly, their retention capacity. This relies on three interdependent elements: the hydrolipidic film, a veil of sweat and lipids that slows evaporation; intercellular lipids, a cement that makes the skin barrier impermeable; and natural moisturizing factors, small molecules capable of capturing ambient humidity. Weaken any of these three by cold, wind, or harsh cleansing, and the surface dries out—regardless of how much water is consumed.

What drinking actually changes — and what it will never change

How much to drink? The key figures

Let's start with an institutional reference rather than a magazine rumor. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published values in 2010 for total fluid intake, including both drinks and meals: approximately 2.0 liters per day for an adult woman and 2.5 liters for an adult man, in moderate temperatures and activity. These values increase with heat, exertion, and breastfeeding.

The often-forgotten point: this total includes what meals provide, which is commonly 20 to 30%. A woman who eats a varied diet therefore doesn't need to drink two liters of beverages, but rather 1.4 to 1.6 liters. This nuance changes everything for those who find drinking a large bottle a chore.

Where the eight glasses myth comes from

In 1945, the American Food and Nutrition Board recommended approximately 2.5 liters daily for an adult—then specified, in the next sentence, that most of it was already contained in prepared foods. Three combinations easily exceed 500 ml: in summer, 200g of watermelon + 150g of tomato + 80g of lettuce + 150g of strawberries (≈ 537ml); in winter, a bowl of soup + 200g of zucchini + an orange (≈ 545ml); on a busy day, cucumber sticks + yogurt + an apple + 125g of grapes (≈ 482ml). Fruits and vegetables rich in water and minerals are not just decorative: well-chosen, they cover a quarter of daily needs.

Conversely, alcohol increases urinary losses, very salty dishes give that bloated feeling upon waking, and heated or air-conditioned air accelerates evaporation from the surface.

Dry or dehydrated: the 4-point test

Here's the turning point. Many increase their fluid intake for weeks with no visible results, because the lack was not hydric but lipidic. The following test can be done at home, over three evenings, without any equipment.

  1. Evening 1, the pinch test. After cleansing and without any skincare, pinch your cheekbone between two fingers. Fine, fan-shaped lines that persist for one to two seconds indicate a lack of hydration. A smooth but rough surface indicates a lack of lipids.

How to interpret the result. A clear improvement between D0 and D7 indicates a real deficit that simply needed to be addressed. Improvement mostly between D14 and D21 indicates that everything was happening on the surface—the most common case for those who were already drinking enough.
