Present in the vast majority of moisturizing skincare products, glycerin (or glycerol) is one of the most reliable — and most underestimated — ingredients in cosmetics. Here's why it deserves its place.
What is glycerin?
Glycerin is a humectant: a molecule that attracts water and helps the skin to retain it. Often of vegetable origin in cosmetics, it is gentle, well-tolerated, and compatible with almost all skin types.
It is a trihydric alcohol, liquid, colorless, and syrupy, obtained from vegetable fats. Glycerin has been used for over a century in cosmetics, where it is among the most widespread ingredients across all ranges.
Its moisturizing properties are based on a simple ability: to retain moisture. It captures water molecules from the ambient air and the stratum corneum, and keeps them on the surface. It also serves as a secondary emulsifier in many moisturizers, which explains its presence even when it is not highlighted.
A practical note on pure liquid glycerin. It can be used, but never in large quantities or without dilution: beyond a certain concentration and in dry air, the mechanism reverses, and the molecule draws from the skin instead of supplying it.
What glycerin does for the skin
- Lasting hydration: it captures water and keeps it in the superficial layers.
- More supple and comfortable skin, less prone to tightness.
- A more "plumped" complexion in appearance.
Glycerin acts on apparent hydration and comfort. It is a cosmetic ingredient, not a treatment.
Glycerin, hyaluronic acid: what's the difference?
Both are humectants that retain water. They are often combined:
- hyaluronic acid acts like a water sponge,
- glycerin stabilizes and prolongs comfort.

For what skin type?
All — that's precisely its strength. It is valuable for:
- dry or dehydrated skin,
- sensitive skin (very gentle),
- oily skin too, in light textures (it moisturizes without being greasy).
"Pure liquid glycerin": good idea?
Pure glycerin can be found in pharmacies. Caution: applied undiluted, in very dry weather, it can draw water from the skin rather than from the air. In a balanced formula (like a serum or a cream), this risk does not exist — it's the best way to enjoy its benefits.
The Nopal Life approach
