Slugging: The K-Beauty Technique for Comfortable Skin Upon Waking

Slugging is one of those K-beauty techniques that's generating a lot of buzz. The principle is simple, almost crude: seal your skin overnight under a layer.

Slugging is one of those K-beauty trends that's creating a buzz. The principle is simple, almost brutal: seal your skin at night under an occlusive layer to wake up with a plumped-up face. But is it right for you? An honest breakdown.

What is slugging?

Slugging involves applying, as the last step in your evening routine, a layer of an occlusive product (traditionally petroleum jelly, but a rich oil can play a similar role) on top of your moisturizers. This layer forms a veil that limits water evaporation overnight.

The name comes from the somewhat shiny "slug" like appearance left by the occlusive layer. Not very glamorous, but the idea is clever: retain hydration where you've applied it.

What is it really for?

  • Limit nocturnal water loss: the skin appears more plumped and comfortable upon waking.
  • Soothe a feeling of tightness on dry or stressed skin (cold, active ingredients).
  • Temporarily enhance the effect of hydrating products applied underneath.

Slugging acts on the comfort and apparent hydration of the skin. It's a cosmetic gesture, not a treatment.

The principle is occlusive: a fatty substance applied as the last layer prevents moisture from escaping during the night. It doesn't hydrate by itself; it retains what was applied before. That's why hyaluronic acid or a moisturizer should always precede it.

This technique is suitable for very dry skin and cold climates. For skin that produces enough sebum or whose pores clog easily, it aggravates more than it helps — beauty trends shouldn't prevent you from considering your own skin type.

For whom — and especially for whom NOT?

✅ Ideal for: dry to very dry, dehydrated, or uncomfortable skin in winter.

⚠️ To avoid or space out for: oily, combination, or blemish-prone skin — occlusion can promote a congested skin appearance. And never over an exfoliating active ingredient or a retinoid on the same evening (occlusion intensifies their effect).

How to do it (the method)

  1. Usual evening routine: cleansing, moisturizing (serum, cream).
  2. As the very last layer, a thin film of an occlusive product.
  3. In the morning, cleanse thoroughly.
  4. 1 to 2 times a week is sufficient — no need to make it a daily habit.
  5. The Nopal Life natural alternative

Petroleum jelly isn't the only option. A nourishing vegetable oil with a dry touch like prickly pear seed oil can play a lighter, naturally-derived "last layer" role: it seals in comfort without the heavy, occlusive effect of petroleum jelly. A "gentle slugging" version, in short, more suited to skin that doesn't like a greasy feel.

    Frequently asked questions

Is slugging suitable for oily skin? Rather not: occlusion can cause congestion. Prefer simple good hydration, or a very light oil very occasionally.

Can you slug every night? It's not necessary; 1 to 2 times a week, on dry skin, is more than enough.

Slugging and retinol on the same night? Avoid: occlusion intensifies the action of retinoids and can cause discomfort.
