Rose water: morning or night?

Morning and evening, without any reservations. Rose water is a floral water: it contains almost nothing problematic, it does not sensitize the skin to the sun, and it does not interfere with any other product. The relevant question is therefore not when to apply it, but at what stage. There are four, and they are not all equally effective.

What rose water really is

It is the product of steam distillation of rose petals. On one side, essential oil is collected, and on the other, water charged with volatile compounds: this water is called floral water, or rose hydrosol.

Its composition is very diluted. It contains a tiny fraction of what is found in essential oil, which explains both its gentleness and the modesty of its effects.

Its fragrance also comes from this. Rose water that doesn't smell of rose has probably been cut, and rose water that smells very strong has probably been perfumed.

Its real benefits are those of a soft and slightly astringent water: it refreshes, it helps soothe overheated skin, it provides a little surface hydration. It is honest, and it is already useful.

Rose water has been used in cosmetics for a very long time, long before chemistry got involved. Distilled rose petals already provided a facial beauty treatment in antiquity, and its use has never really stopped.

Its properties can be summed up in three words: soft, slightly astringent, soothing. None of these properties are spectacular, and that is precisely what makes it usable daily by everyone.

The benefits of rose water on the face are mainly seen with regular use. Skin that receives natural floral water twice a day is skin that is not aggressed - it's modest, and it's already a lot.

Step 1 – after cleansing, the most useful

This is the main use, morning and evening. Apply floral water to clean skin, with cotton or by hand, before serum and cream.

It then plays two roles: it removes cleanser and hard water residues, and it leaves the skin damp, which allows subsequent treatments to work better. This second point is the most important - a serum applied to damp skin gives more than a serum applied to dry skin.

By hand rather than with cotton, preferably. The cotton absorbs half of it and unnecessarily rubs the skin.

Used at this stage, rose water replaces a toning lotion without its drawbacks. Classic lotions often contain alcohol, which strips the skin; floral water does not.

On a clean face, pour a small amount into the palm of your hand and press onto the cheeks, forehead, chin. The surface hydration obtained prepares the skin for what follows.

This is the gesture to remember if you only keep one. Used in this way, morning and evening, it integrates into a daily beauty routine without complicating anything.

You can also use it as a preparation before a mask: a moistened face receives clay better, and the mask dries less quickly.

Step 2 – as a mist during the day

In a spray bottle, rose water can be used to refresh the face at any time. This is the most pleasant and least effective use.

Be careful of one thing: a mist that dries in the open air carries away some of the skin's water. For this gesture not to be counterproductive, you must apply a treatment over it, or dab before complete drying.

For tired eyes, a compress of cool rose water works well. Five minutes, with eyes closed – this is for comfort, not a treatment.

On skin overheated by the sun or heating, the mist helps to quickly soothe. This is one of the rare situations where the effect is felt immediately.

Keep the bottle in the refrigerator in summer: fresh floral water soothes much better than room temperature water, and its preservation also benefits.

Spray twenty centimeters from the face, with eyes closed. A mist that is too close wets without distributing.

Step 3 – to finish makeup removal

After a cleansing oil or milk, rose water removes the residual film. It advantageously replaces a classic toning lotion, which is often more aggressive.

This use is done in the evening, obviously. This is the only time when the choice of time is necessary, and it is necessary for a trivial reason.

You can also use it between two makeup removal steps, to remove the oiliness of an oil before moving on to the cleanser. The face gains in comfort, and the subsequent cleanser works better.

On sensitive skin, this step advantageously replaces a second micellar water. Floral water has nothing to strip, and it doesn't leave the film that micellar waters are criticized for.

Step 4 – in a homemade mask

Rose water serves as the aqueous phase in a clay mask. It gives a softer texture than tap water, and the result is more pleasant to apply.

Use rose water to dilute green or white clay: count two spoons for one spoon of powder, and adjust. The mask should never dry completely on the skin.

On hair, it is used as a final rinse or as a mist on the lengths. The effect is mainly on the fragrance and the suppleness for styling.

Its hair benefits are mainly sensory: the fragrance lasts a few hours and the fiber detangles a little better. You won't repair anything with a floral water.

For a more complete treatment, mix it with a vegetable oil in a spray bottle, and shake before each use. This type of natural treatment is well suited for dry and curly hair.

On the scalp, a few sprays are enough to refresh without weighing down. It is not a treatment, it is a gesture of comfort.

How to choose it well

Only one thing to check on the label: the list should contain one or two ingredients. "Rosa damascena flower water", possibly a preservative. Nothing else.

Avoid products that list "fragrance", "aqua" first, or a ten-line list. These are perfumed waters, not floral waters.

The bottle matters: tinted glass or opaque plastic. Floral water degrades in light, and its natural scent quickly turns.

After opening, keep it in the refrigerator and use it within three to six months. This is short, and it's normal for a product without strong preservatives.

The origin of the petals is as important as the process. Rosa damascena, cultivated in Bulgaria or Turkey, and Rosa centifolia, cultivated in Morocco and the south of France, are the two varieties used in cosmetics.

A natural floral water bears the mention of its variety and origin. This is the best quality indicator available on a shelf, long before the price.

What it doesn't do

It is not enough as a moisturizing treatment. The hydration it provides evaporates; a treatment on top is needed to retain it.

It does not replace a cleanser. Applying floral water to a made-up face does not deeply clean anything.

It does not treat acne or established redness. It can soothe a sensation of overheating, which is different from a treatment.

And it has nothing to do with rose essential oil, which is a very concentrated product, subject to precautions of use that floral water does not require.

It is also not suitable as the sole facial treatment, even for skin that does not tolerate creams well. The hydration it leaves is real but superficial, and bare skin dries out within a few hours.

That said, its soothing properties are useful where other products fail: on sensitive skin that reacts to almost everything, a natural floral water is often the only tolerated treatment without reservation.

This is perhaps the best summary of its benefits: a beauty product without promises, used for what it truly does, and not for what we would like it to do.

The only one of the four uses that backfires

Spraying a floral water during the day refreshes, then evaporates, taking a little of what was there with it: without anything to seal it, the mist works against itself. The other three uses hold, and a rose water and lactic acid glow tonic mainly serves the first – on clean skin, before what follows.
