Combining vitamin C and rose water: the pH question

Yes, with one condition: apply them one after the other, never mix them. The reason lies in the pH, and it applies to all floral waters.

Why mixing is problematic

Ascorbic acid is only active below pH 3.5. A floral water has a pH between 4 and 5, close to neutral. Mixing the two in the palm of your hand raises the serum's pH, and a portion of the active ingredient stops working.

It's not dangerous; it's simply useless: you're applying a product whose value has been partially neutralized, without knowing it. Applied successively, a minute apart, both maintain their own pH.

Rose water: what it really is

Steam passes through rose petals, carrying volatile compounds, then condenses. Essential oil is collected on one side and water laden with compounds on the other: the hydrosol. "Rose water," "floral water," and "rose hydrosol" all refer to the same product.

Its concentration of compounds from the petals is on the order of a few hundredths of a percent. It is a comfort product, very well tolerated, and not an active ingredient — knowing this prevents expecting what it cannot deliver.

The order that works

In the morning, on clean skin: rose water first, by patting or misting, then wait one minute. Vitamin C serum next, on a slightly damp surface which improves its spread. Then cream, then sunscreen.

Reversing the order also works, but floral water applied last dilutes the serum. The order from most fluid to most concentrated gives a more predictable result.

What the combination brings

Floral water prepares the skin and removes the last cleansing residues. It provides a feeling of freshness and slight comfort. Vitamin C does the fundamental work on radiance and evenness of complexion.

For oily skin, this combination has the advantage of being light: neither texture is heavy, which allows for a simple morning routine under makeup.

What to avoid

Mixing, for the reason explained above. A floral water containing alcohol, which would negate the desired comfort. And rose essential oil instead of hydrosol: these are two unrelated products, essential oil being highly concentrated and to be handled with care.

Check the Latin name on the label—most often Rosa damascena—and a short ingredient list. A long list indicates a water reconstituted from aromas.

Preservation, the weak point of the combination

A vitamin C serum lasts three months after opening and is judged by its color: beyond straw yellow, it should be discarded. A floral water without preservative lasts one month in the refrigerator, six to twelve with a preservative.

Our Vitamin C radiance serum and the rose water radiance toner cover both steps, the latter combining hydrosol with a mild acid that gives it an action that water alone does not have.

Distillation, and what it produces

Water vapor passes through the petals, carrying volatile compounds, then condenses in a cooled coil. The essential oil, which floats, is then separated from the rose floral water, which remains charged with water-soluble compounds.

This floral water is therefore not perfumed water: it is the by-product of an extraction, with its own composition. Its concentration of compounds from the petals remains low, of the order of a few hundredths of a percent.

The benefits of rose water, and their limits

It soothes temporary redness, provides a feeling of freshness, and contributes to a more radiant complexion through a simple surface hydration effect. On dry skin, it usefully prepares the skin for subsequent steps.

It is often credited with tightening pores: their diameter does not change through cosmetic means. What is observed is an immediate refreshing effect that makes them momentarily less visible. One should not confuse the two.

Daily use of rose water

After cleansing the face, on a cotton pad or by spraying. Morning and evening, and as many times as desired throughout the day for refreshment. It also serves as a base for mixing an clay powder for a mask, instead of tap water.

For hair, it is used as a leave-in mist. Same product, same properties, no special precautions — it is one of the rare treatments that poses no tolerance issues.

Choosing a floral water that's worth its price

The Latin name on the label, a short list, and nothing but floral water and possibly a preservative. A longer list indicates a water reconstituted from aromas, without the benefits of distillation.

It should smell distinctly of rose. An odorless water has been too diluted; a water with a strong fragrance has been perfumed afterwards. Between the two, a natural and subtle scent is the good sign.

Cleanse, then tone: why this order

A cleanser, even a gentle one, leaves residues and slightly alters the surface pH. Floral rose water removes these residues and helps the skin regain its balance, which prepares the next step.

It plays a subtle yet real role. It doesn't, on its own, justify purchasing a product, but it explains why this step is included in almost all structured routines, and why it's placed here and not elsewhere.

According to skin type

Dry skin: floral water prepares, serum acts, a rich cream seals. Oily skin: the two are sufficient under a light gel. Sensitive skin: hydrosol alone for the first few weeks, then the active ingredient introduced gradually.

On combination skin, the same floral water is applied everywhere and only the final layer changes depending on the areas. This is the simplest adjustment for this profile.

Its other uses

As a refreshing mist during the day. To dilute clay powder for a mask, instead of water. On hair, as a leave-in treatment. On tired eyelids, with a soaked, cool cotton pad.

None of these uses require any precautions, making it a versatile and safe beauty product — its main quality, along with its gentleness.

What vitamin C adds

A fundamental work on complexion radiance and evenness, measurable after eight to twelve weeks. Floral water provides nothing of the sort: it refreshes and soothes, which is useful and of a different nature.

Combining them therefore covers two distinct needs with two simple products, and it's a complete morning routine in three steps.
