Centella asiatica: dangers, limitations, and tolerability

Centella is very well tolerated, and this is precisely what makes the risk invisible. The risk does not concern the plant itself, but what is sold under its name.

A marketing term without a definition

"Cica" has no regulatory definition. A cream that features it may contain an extract titrated at five percent, a trace of centella water at the end of the ingredient list, or nothing at all — the term indicates a promise, not a composition.

This is the only real pitfall of this ingredient. It does not pose a danger; it presents a risk of paying for a word. Searching for "Centella asiatica extract" in the first third of the list, or better yet, the mention of a specific compound — madecassoside, asiaticoside — resolves the issue.

Tolerance, in detail

Reported reactions are rare. Centella asiatica belongs to the Apiaceae family, the family of carrots and parsley; people allergic to this family may react, which remains exceptional in cosmetic application.

A patch test on the crook of the elbow for two days remains the rule, as for any concentrated plant extract. On very reactive skin, a short-list aqueous serum is preferable to a rich cream: it is often the excipient that causes problems, not the active ingredient.

The limits of what it can do

What is well-documented: soothing reactive skin, with titrated extracts, in four to six weeks. What is much less documented: everything related to firmness and signs of aging, whose mentioned mechanisms come from cellular studies and oral intake research.

It also does not act on established imperfections or dark spots. On skin weakened by an overly strong active ingredient, however, it supports the return to comfort better than most alternatives.

Uses not related to cosmetics

The plant has been used for centuries in Asia, both orally and topically, and its reputation largely comes from there. These uses fall under medical care and competent advice, not a jar of cream.

Confusing the two registers leads to expecting from a cream what only supervised intake could potentially provide — and this is what many arguments perpetuate.

Preservation, a point to monitor

A centella extract lives in an aqueous phase, meaning in an environment where microorganisms develop as soon as the preservative system weakens. Six to twelve months after opening, preferably in a sealed container rather than a jar.

Cloudiness, a deposit, or a changing odor indicates that it should be discarded. On sensitive skin, a contaminated product often first manifests as tingling with a product that was previously well-tolerated.

For whom, in practice

Reactive skin and skin going through a period of fragility — after exposure, with the return of cold weather, or during the introduction of a strong active ingredient. This is its best use and it is well supported by what we know.

Our gentle prebiotic mist targets the same issues through another route, and the centella asiatica page details the compounds and their levels of evidence.

Tiger grass and the skin barrier

The popular name — tiger grass — comes from a legend that wounded tigers would roll in it. What we know today is more modest and more useful: its compounds help to calm irritation and restore the comfort of a weakened skin barrier.

A healthy barrier retains water better and allows fewer irritants to enter. This is how centella acts on redness and discomfort — indirectly, over several weeks, and not as an immediate calming agent.

Integrating it into a routine

After cleansing, before moisturizer, morning and evening on reactive skin. It combines with hydration, ceramides, and panthenol without special precautions, making it simple to add to an existing routine.

For dry skin, a serum under a rich cream. For combination skin, a light essence alone. The desired balance is daily comfort, not correction.

Its effectiveness, and what conditions it

It depends entirely on the titration of the extract. A product that displays a percentage or names a specific compound is likely to deliver; a product that simply uses the word "cica" says nothing about its actual effectiveness.

This is the only check that matters before buying, and it takes ten seconds on the shelf.

Protecting rather than repairing

Reactive skin improves first by removing what irritates it: hot water, harsh cleansers, frequent scrubs, fragrances, stacked active ingredients. This step yields faster results than any soothing ingredient added on top.

Centella then comes in to support the return to balance. It does not replace the removal of irritants, and expecting it to do so leads to wasted months.

What to remember

A safe, well-tolerated ingredient, useful for soothing — and a marketing term that guarantees nothing. Check the titration, prefer a sealed container, and don't ask it to act on signs of aging: these three precautions are sufficient.

Daily sun protection does more for reactive skin than any extract, by reducing the aggression that sustains it.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used every day? Yes, morning and evening, indefinitely. It is a maintenance ingredient whose daily use is the normal mode.

Is it suitable for oily skin? Yes, in a light texture. The plant poses no problem for this skin type; the excipient is the deciding factor.

Can it be combined with an acid or a retinoid? Without difficulty, and this is even one of its best uses: it helps protect comfort during the introduction of a strong active ingredient and reduces irritations that cause people to give up.

During pregnancy? No established contraindication in cosmetic application. As always, the advice of a healthcare professional takes precedence in case of doubt.
