Combining Niacinamide and Squalane: The Method

This is one of the safest combinations in common cosmetics. Niacinamide acts on the skin barrier and pore appearance; squalane seals without weighing down or interfering. No risk of interaction, no special precautions.

The essentials

  • Order: Niacinamide serum first, then squalane.
  • Waiting time: one minute.
  • Concentration: 2 to 5% niacinamide is sufficient.
  • Quantities: a few drops of serum, 3 to 4 of squalane.
  • Frequency: morning and evening.

Why this combination works

Niacinamide is water-soluble: it must reach the skin before any oily layer. Squalane is a neutral emollient, with no active ingredients of its own, which eliminates any question of compatibility.

This neutrality is precisely its asset. A rich vegetable oil would bring its own compounds, with a slight but real risk of not combining well. Squalane, on the other hand, only seals.

The protocol

1. Gentle cleansing, dabbing rather than wiping.

2. Niacinamide serum, a few drops smoothed without rubbing.

3. Wait one minute for it to penetrate.

4. Three to four drops of squalane, pressed in.

You can insert a hyaluronic acid serum between the two, on damp skin. The three layer without difficulty.

What niacinamide brings

It is a form of vitamin B3, extensively studied. Its best-documented action concerns the skin barrier: better supported, it loses less water and reacts less to aggressions.

It also acts on sebum production, which helps limit shine and refines the appearance of skin texture for those with oily skin. It is also used for complexion evenness and soothing colored areas.

What squalane brings

A texture, essentially, and that's already a lot. It seals the routine without leaving a film, has no scent, and is suitable for skin that cannot tolerate any vegetable oil.

It does not nourish in the strict sense: no essential fatty acids, no antioxidants, no vitamins. If your skin needs a contribution, you should add a vegetable oil rather than relying on it.

For skin that shines

This is where the combination works best. Niacinamide works on shine and skin texture; squalane provides comfort without overloading.

Many of these skins are actually dehydrated because they have been stripped. This light combination helps restore comfort without resorting to rich textures that they cannot tolerate.

For reactive skin

Both are very well tolerated. Niacinamide is also often recommended for reactive skin, due to its action on the barrier.

Still, introduce it every other night for the first week: a slight initial warming sensation is possible, and it's better to distinguish it from an intolerance.

What should preferably not be combined

Niacinamide combines well with almost everything, including hyaluronic acid and common moisturizers. Two usual caveats nonetheless.

With retinol, prefer alternation for the first few weeks: accumulation remains tolerable for many, but it complicates the identification of what is irritating.

With an exfoliant, apply them at different times rather than one on top of the other.

How long to judge

Comfort returns in a few days. Skin texture and complexion evenness take six to eight weeks: it's a slow active ingredient, and abandoning it after two weeks means never truly testing it.

Only change one parameter at a time during this period, otherwise you won't know what to attribute the result to.

Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid: the complete trio

Adding a hyaluronic acid serum between the two provides the most complete routine for minimal effort. The humectant provides water, niacinamide supports the barrier, squalane seals everything.

These three ingredients are among the best tolerated in common cosmetics and layer without any difficulty. It's a foundation that can be built upon for years.

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinamide, is one of the most studied active ingredients in cosmetics. Its soothing properties and its role in strengthening the skin barrier are documented by numerous works.

Its effectiveness is real but progressive. Benefits for skin texture and complexion evenness require six to eight weeks of daily use — a timeframe that few people allow, which explains a good part of the disappointed reviews.

According to your skin type

Dry skin: keep both, but add a richer cream on top. Squalane alone will not be enough to compensate for a lipid deficit.

Combination skin: this is the ideal scenario. The lightness of squalane suits the entire face without overloading the T-zone.

Reactive skin: introduce niacinamide gradually, every other evening for the first week.

With salicylic acid in the same routine

It's possible, provided you separate them in time. The exfoliant on the evenings you use it, niacinamide and squalane every other evening and every morning.

On the same evening, you must wait: salicylic acid on clean skin, ten minutes, then the rest of the routine. Directly layering two active ingredients means no longer knowing which produces what, or which irritates.

Reducing imperfections: what's realistic

Niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of superficial imperfections and limit shine. It is a useful support, not a treatment.

Established acne requires dermatological advice, and no combination of cosmetics will replace it. Stating this clearly is part of honest advice.

Limitations

This routine improves the appearance and comfort of the skin. It is cosmetic and does not treat any condition. Established redness or imperfections require dermatological advice.
