They don't answer the same question. Hyaluronic acid retains water in the superficial layers; niacinamide acts on skin comfort and texture. If your skin feels tight, choose hyaluronic acid. If it bothers you with its irregularities, turn to niacinamide.
The table that decides
| Criterion | Hyaluronic Acid | Niacinamide |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | retain water on the surface | comfort, skin texture, visible pores |
| Perceived effect | fast, from the first few days | gradual, over several weeks |
| Usual concentration | 0.1 to 2% | 4 to 10% |
| Tolerance | very good | good, sometimes tingling at the beginning |
| Time | morning and evening | morning and evening |
| Condition for effectiveness | apply to damp skin, then seal | regularity |
Choose hyaluronic acid if…
Your skin feels tight after cleansing, shows dehydration lines at the end of the day, or looks dull without being irregular. This is a sign of lack of water, not lack of care.
Beware of a condition often ignored: hyaluronic acid retains the water it finds. Applied to dry skin in a dry room, it can give a feeling of discomfort. Two actions make it effective — apply it to slightly damp skin, then cover it with a fatty substance or a cream.
Choose niacinamide if…
Your concerns are about visible pores, an uneven complexion, or skin that shines during the day. Niacinamide has been studied for a long time in these areas, with gradual results.
It requires patience: allow six to eight weeks of regular use before judging. This is the main difference with hyaluronic acid, whose effect is felt almost immediately — but remains superficial and temporary.
What if we took both?
This is the most common case, and it presents no difficulty. Both are water-soluble and are placed at the beginning of the routine.
In the same serum: many formulas already combine them. This is the simplest option.
In two serums: the thinnest first, usually hyaluronic acid on damp skin, then niacinamide one minute later. Finish with a fatty substance — a vegetable oil or a cream — otherwise hyaluronic acid loses its interest.
The skin barrier, common ground
Niacinamide is studied for its role in strengthening the skin barrier: it participates in the synthesis of lipids that ensure the cohesion of the superficial layers. A stronger barrier retains moisture better and better withstands external aggressions.
Hyaluronic acid does not act on this barrier. It is a humectant: it retains up to several hundred times its weight in water molecules, but only where it is, on the surface. The two approaches are complementary rather than competing.
According to skin types
Combination to oily skin: niacinamide is often the best first choice. It is associated with a regulation of sebum production and a visible refinement of skin texture after a few weeks.
Dry and dehydrated skin: hyaluronic acid provides immediate relief, provided it is sealed with a fatty substance.
Dull skin or skin with spots: niacinamide is traditionally cited for its action on complexion uniformity. Results require patience and daily sun care, without which nothing lasts.
What to start with
With hyaluronic acid. Its tolerance is excellent, its effect immediate, and it does not require acclimatization. Add niacinamide three to four weeks later, when the routine is established.
Introducing two active ingredients at the same time makes it impossible to attribute a result — or a reaction — to one rather than the other. This is the rule for all active ingredients.
Molecular weight and penetration
Not all hyaluronic acids are created equal. A high molecular weight remains on the surface and forms a film; a lower weight goes a little deeper into the superficial layers. Good formulas combine several molecular weights, which explains the difference in results between two serums displaying the same concentration.
Niacinamide does not pose this question: it is a small molecule that penetrates without difficulty. The only parameter to monitor is its concentration, and the fact that it becomes more irritating as it increases.
Where to place them in a skincare routine
Both slip in after cleansing, before moisturizer. If you already use a dark spot corrector or an exfoliant, space out their introduction by a few weeks to be able to attribute a result.
On skin prone to shine, the sebum regulation obtained by niacinamide is especially visible at the end of the day, on the T-zone. On dry skin, it is hyaluronic acid combined with a fatty substance that makes the skin smoother to the touch.
Sensitive skin
Hyaluronic acid is suitable for almost all reactive skin. Niacinamide is generally well accepted, but some skin may experience tingling in the first few days: start at 4%, every other day, and only increase if all goes well.
What neither of them does
Neither replaces sun protection. These are cosmetic treatments: they do not cure and do not treat any skin condition. Persistent redness, lesions, or worsening despite a gentle routine require dermatological advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can both be used in the same routine?
Yes, without difficulty. Both are water-soluble and are placed at the beginning of the routine. The thinnest first, then the other one minute later, and a fatty substance to finish.
Which one acts fastest?
Hyaluronic acid, whose effect is felt in a few days but remains superficial. Niacinamide requires six to eight weeks and produces more lasting changes.
Is a cream absolutely necessary after hyaluronic acid?
A fatty substance or a cream, yes. Without this step, the retained water evaporates and the feeling of tightness may even increase, especially in dry air.
What concentration of niacinamide to start with?
Four to five percent is enough to start. Higher concentrations do not provide a demonstrated benefit and increase the risk of discomfort for reactive skin.
If you only had to keep one
Both have their merits, but they do not address the same complaint. Skin that feels tight at the end of the day first needs water retained on the surface: this is the domain of hyaluronic acid, and that of our plumping moisturizing gel with hyaluronic acid, which combines it with sodium PCA. Niacinamide comes next, when texture and uniformity take precedence over hydration.
