Combining Prickly Pear Seed Oil and Zinc: the Method

The order of application depends entirely on the form of zinc—and getting it wrong is costly. With a zinc PCA serum, prickly pear seed oil comes after. With a zinc oxide sunscreen, it comes before, imperatively.

Two Scenarios

Zinc Form Order Why
Zinc PCA serum zinc then oil water-based before oil-based
Zinc oxide sunscreen oil then zinc the filter must remain on the surface

With a Zinc PCA Serum

This is the simplest case. Zinc PCA is presented in a water-based solution and is applied early in the routine; prickly pear seed oil is the final step.

After cleansing, apply the serum to still-damp skin. Wait one minute, then apply one to two drops of prickly pear seed oil warmed between your palms.

For oily skin, a single drop is enough. The fine texture of prickly pear seed oil performs better than expected on this skin type.

With Zinc Oxide Sunscreen

Here, the order is reversed, and this is a rule not to be broken. A mineral filter acts on the surface: if applied under an oil, it disperses and loses some of its effectiveness.

The correct sequence: usual skincare, then prickly pear seed oil, then the sunscreen as the very last layer. Allow one minute between the oil and the filter.

If your skin cannot tolerate this layering, keep the prickly pear seed oil for the evening and the filter for the morning. This is a perfectly acceptable compromise.

Benefits of Prickly Pear Seed Oil

A linoleic acid content often exceeding 60% of its profile, and a significant amount of tocopherols. The former is a component of barrier lipids; the latter limits oxidative damage.

Prickly pear seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the fruit of Opuntia ficus indica, a cactus from arid lands. Nearly a ton of prickly pears yields one liter of oil, which explains its price.

At NOPAL LIFE, the fruits come from family farms in the arid high plateaus of eastern Algeria and Kabylia, where the fig tree grows without irrigation.

For Which Skin Types

Dry skin: prickly pear seed oil generously, zinc primarily as a sunscreen filter.

Oily skin: zinc PCA during the day, one drop of prickly pear seed oil in the evening.

Mature skin: oil morning and evening, with a zinc oxide filter in the morning.

Reactive skin: zinc oxide is one of the best-tolerated filters, and pure prickly pear seed oil contains no additives.

A Precaution on Oral Zinc

Zinc as a dietary supplement is not within the scope of this page. It is a different product, and its intake is not without consequences.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should seek medical advice before any supplementation, and this applies to zinc as well as to other supplements. Nothing of the foregoing concerns this use.

What the Combination Provides

With a sunscreen filter, the combination is hard to beat: prickly pear seed oil nourishes and provides antioxidants, while zinc blocks the primary cause of visible skin aging.

With zinc PCA, the benefit is more modest and relates to the comfort of oily skin that is not nourished. This is a common and rarely well-treated issue.

Judging the Results Timeline

Comfort returns in a few days. Suppleness and evenness of skin texture, which are due to prickly pear seed oil, take three to four weeks.

The effect of sun protection, however, cannot be judged: it is measured by what does not happen, over years. This is frustrating but is the most useful part of this routine.

A Vegetable Oil Rich in Essential Fatty Acids

Prickly pear seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the fruit of Opuntia ficus indica. Its linoleic acid content often exceeds 60%, making it one of the best-endowed vegetable oils.

It takes nearly a ton of prickly pears for one liter of oil. At NOPAL LIFE, the fruits come from family farms in the arid high plateaus of eastern Algeria and Kabylia, cold-pressed.

Using Prickly Pear Seed Oil Daily

Two to three drops in the evening, just one in the morning under makeup. Apply to slightly damp skin, warmed between the palms, by pressing.

One drop is enough for the eye contour. Prickly pear seed oil is well-tolerated there, provided you don't apply too much.

Anti-Aging and Mature Skin

For mature skin, prickly pear seed oil compensates for decreased lipid production. Its tocopherols also limit the oxidation of the fatty phase.

Combined with a zinc oxide sunscreen, it forms a complete anti-aging routine: one nourishes, the other blocks the primary cause of visible skin aging.

On Dry Skin

This is the simplest area. A moisturizer, then two to three drops of prickly pear seed oil, and a sunscreen in the morning.

Zinc PCA is not very useful here: it is for oily skin. For dry skin, the contribution of prickly pear seed oil is what matters.

Recognizing Quality Oil

First cold-pressed, tinted glass, 100% prickly pear seed oil without additives, distinct plant scent. A pale and odorless oil has probably been refined.

Buy a size you will finish in two months. Fresh prickly pear seed oil is better than a large bottle opened a year ago.
