Prickly pear seed oil or zinc: which to choose?

The word 'zinc' covers several very different things, and that's the first clarification to make. In cosmetics, we find zinc oxide — a mineral sun filter — and zinc PCA, used for oily skin. Prickly pear seed oil, on the other hand, is a nourishing lipid. Their uses hardly overlap.

Three forms of zinc, three uses

Zinc oxide is a mineral sun filter, present in many sunscreens and diaper creams. It acts on the surface, reflecting radiation.

Zinc PCA is used in skincare products for highly oily skin, where it helps to limit shine.

Oral zinc is a dietary supplement and falls outside the scope of this page: it is not a cosmetic, and its use requires professional advice.

What prickly pear seed oil offers

Extracted from the seeds of the Opuntia ficus indica fruit, prickly pear seed oil boasts a linoleic acid content that often exceeds 60%. This essential fatty acid is a direct component of the lipids in the skin barrier.

It also provides tocopherols, whose antioxidant action limits free radical damage to the oily phase of the skin.

Nearly a ton of prickly pears are needed for one liter of oil. At NOPAL LIFE, the fruits come from family farms in the arid highlands of eastern Algeria and Kabylia, cold-pressed.

Which one to choose

The question only arises if you specify which type of zinc is being discussed.

Compared to zinc oxide: no comparison is possible. It is a sunscreen, and prickly pear seed oil is not. The two can be combined, with the oil applied before the sunscreen.

Compared to zinc PCA: zinc for shine, prickly pear seed oil for suppleness and comfort. Oily skin may need both.

Does oily skin need oil?

Often, yes — and it's counter-intuitive. Many highly oily skin types actually lack essential lipids because they have been stripped by overly aggressive treatments.

Prickly pear seed oil is better suited for this skin type than most vegetable oils: its texture is fine and it penetrates quickly. A single drop in the evening is enough for a test.

Using them together

With a zinc PCA treatment: serum first, then one drop of prickly pear seed oil as the last layer.

With a zinc oxide sunscreen: prickly pear seed oil first, sunscreen last, always. A filter applied under an oil loses some of its effectiveness.

Anti-aging: what each brings

Prickly pear seed oil provides antioxidants and maintains a more robust barrier, leaving the skin more supple. Its effects develop over three to four weeks.

Zinc oxide, on the other hand, acts on the primary cause of visible skin aging by blocking radiation. This is the most established action — far superior to everything else, including oil.

A precaution about supplements

Oral zinc is sometimes presented as a solution for blemishes. It is a dietary supplement, not a cosmetic, and its intake is not without consequences.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women, in particular, should seek medical advice before any supplementation. This page only discusses external use.

Recognizing quality oil

First cold-pressed, tinted glass bottle, 100% prickly pear seed oil composition without additives, clear vegetal scent.

An odorless oil has probably been refined; a rancid oil has gone bad. The price is a final indicator, given the yield.

How to apply prickly pear seed oil

Two to three drops as the last step, on slightly damp skin, warmed between the palms. A single drop on the eye contour, dabbed with the ring finger.

If you use a zinc oxide sunscreen, prickly pear seed oil comes before it — never after. A mineral filter must remain on the surface to be effective.

Anti-aging: what prickly pear seed oil provides

Its content of essential fatty acids maintains a more robust barrier, which leaves the skin more supple and the texture more even. Its tocopherols limit free radical damage to the oily phase.

These effects develop in three to four weeks. Prickly pear seed oil does not fill an established wrinkle, and no vegetable oil does.

For what skin types

Dry and mature skin: prickly pear seed oil morning and evening.

Oily skin: one drop in the evening, with a zinc PCA treatment during the day.

Reactive skin: zinc oxide is one of the best-tolerated sun filters, and pure prickly pear seed oil contains no additives.

A quality prickly pear seed oil

The yield explains the price: nearly a ton of prickly pears for one liter. At NOPAL LIFE, the fruits come from family farms in the arid highlands of eastern Algeria and Kabylia.

What you should know

These products are cosmetics: they affect the appearance and comfort of the skin, without treating conditions. Established acne requires dermatological advice.
