The order of application entirely depends on the form of zinc, and getting it wrong is costly. With a zinc PCA serum, hyaluronic acid goes on first. With a sunscreen with zinc oxide, it is absolutely the last layer.
Two scenarios
| Form of zinc | Order | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc PCA serum | hyaluronic acid then zinc | humectant on damp skin first |
| Zinc oxide sunscreen | hyaluronic acid, cream, then filter | filter must remain on the surface |
With a zinc PCA serum
Apply hyaluronic acid first, on still damp skin: this is the condition for it to capture anything. The zinc PCA treatment comes next, followed by a light cream.
This combination is particularly suitable for skin that is shiny yet lacks water — a much more common case than generally believed, and rarely well treated.
With zinc oxide sunscreen
Here, the order allows no exceptions. A mineral filter works on the surface: applied under a cream or oil, it disperses and loses some of its effectiveness.
The sequence: hyaluronic acid on damp skin, cream, then the sunscreen as the very last layer. Allow one minute between each step.
What hyaluronic acid provides
It retains several hundred times its weight in water and reduces dehydration lines. The effect is noticeable within a few days.
Serious formulations combine several molecular weights — sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid in the same ingredient list. A concentration of 1 to 2% is sufficient.
What zinc provides
Depending on its form: protection against radiation for zinc oxide, an action on shine for zinc PCA.
In both cases, it does not hydrate. Zinc and hyaluronic acid do not overlap in any way, which is precisely why they should be combined.
The mistake that cancels out the benefit
Applying hyaluronic acid to perfectly dry skin. A humectant needs available water; without it, it can, on the contrary, accentuate tightness.
Dab instead of wiping after cleansing, and apply immediately afterwards. This gesture costs nothing and changes more than the choice of product.
According to your skin type
Oily skin: hyaluronic acid and zinc PCA, with a light gel-cream.
Combination skin: zinc PCA on the T-zone, hyaluronic acid everywhere.
Dry skin: zinc mainly in the form of a sunscreen, and a rich cream after hyaluronic acid.
Reactive skin: zinc oxide is one of the best-tolerated filters, and hyaluronic acid practically never poses a problem.
Anti-aging: what really matters
The combination of hyaluronic acid and zinc oxide is hard to beat in this area: one improves immediate appearance, the other blocks the primary cause of visible skin aging.
It's a simple, inexpensive routine, and its effect is better established than most serums sold as anti-aging.
A precaution about oral zinc
Zinc as a dietary supplement is not within the scope of this page. Its intake is not trivial, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek medical advice before any supplementation.
What you need to know
These products are cosmetics and act on the appearance and comfort of the skin, without treating any condition. Any question of supplementation falls under medical advice.
