Hyaluronic Acid or Zinc: Which one for your skin?

The word "zinc" covers three different things, and that's the first clarification to make. In cosmetics, we find zinc oxide, a mineral sunscreen, and zinc PCA, used for oily skin. Hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, is a humectant. Their uses hardly overlap.

Three forms, three uses

Zinc oxide is a mineral sunscreen that acts on the surface, found in many sunscreens and diaper creams.

Zinc PCA is included in skincare products for skin that produces a lot of oil, where it helps limit shine.

Oral zinc is a dietary supplement and falls outside the scope of this page. Its intake is not trivial and requires professional advice.

What hyaluronic acid does

It retains several hundred times its weight in water and forms a reservoir in the upper layers. The effect is noticeable within a few days and reduces dehydration fine lines.

It is found in several forms in ingredient lists: hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate, its most common form. A good formula combines several molecular weights.

Its limitation is constant: without a fatty layer on top, the captured water evaporates. Hyaluronic acid is never used alone.

Which to choose

The question only arises if we specify which zinc is being referred to.

Compared to zinc oxide: no comparison possible. It is a sunscreen, and hyaluronic acid is not. Both can be combined in the same routine.

Compared to zinc PCA: zinc for shine, hyaluronic acid for hydration. Oily skin often needs both.

Does oily skin lack water?

Often, yes. The amount of sebum and water content are two independent parameters, and many skins that appear shiny are actually dehydrated because they have been stripped.

In this case, hyaluronic acid is exactly the missing ingredient. A light serum, followed by a gel-cream, is enough to restore balance.

Using them together

With a zinc PCA product: hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin, then the zinc product, then a light cream.

With a zinc oxide sunscreen: hyaluronic acid first, cream next, the filter as the very last layer. A mineral filter must remain on the surface to be effective.

The benefits of hyaluronic acid, without exaggeration

Immediate comfort, a visible plumping effect, reduced dehydration fine lines. These are real and fast results.

It does not act on dark spots, established wrinkles, or pores. And it does not provide any lipids: on rough skin, a fatty substance will be needed in addition.

Anti-aging: what each brings

Hyaluronic acid improves appearance by filling in reversible fine lines. Zinc oxide, on the other hand, acts on the primary cause of visible skin aging by blocking radiation.

In this area, sunscreen is far superior to everything else — including hyaluronic acid. It is the action whose effect is best established.

A precaution about supplements

Oral zinc is sometimes presented as a solution for imperfections. It is a dietary supplement, not a cosmetic, and this page only deals with external use.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek medical advice before any supplementation.

What you need to know

These products are cosmetics: they act on the appearance and comfort of the skin, without treating any condition. Established acne requires dermatological advice.
