Both retain water, but one also soothes. Hyaluronic acid is a pure humectant, specializing in retention. Panthenol—provitamin B5—also retains water, and adds a soothing action for stressed skin.

What Hyaluronic Acid Does
It retains several hundred times its weight in water and forms a reservoir in the upper layers. The plumping effect is noticeable in a few days and reduces dehydration fine lines.
Serious formulas combine several molecular weights: the larger ones smooth the surface, the smaller ones penetrate a little. This is the best indicator of the quality of a hyaluronic acid serum.
What Panthenol Does
It is the stable form of provitamin B5, which the skin converts into pantothenic acid. It retains water, like hyaluronic acid, and adds a soothing effect that the latter does not have.
Its tolerance is among the best in common cosmetics, which explains its presence in many products for reactive skin and stressed areas.
It is also widely used in hair care, where it improves flexibility and limits breakage during detangling.
Which One to Choose
Dehydrated skin, fine lines at the end of the day: hyaluronic acid, whose plumping effect is more pronounced.
Irritated, reddened, tingling skin: panthenol, the only one of the two that soothes.
After a period of improperly dosed actives: panthenol first, then hyaluronic acid.
When in doubt: both, they layer without difficulty.
Using Them Together
This is common and without any constraints: many serums already combine hyaluronic acid and panthenol in the same formula.
If you layer them, the order doesn't matter—both are water-soluble and applied early in the routine. Apply to damp skin, then seal with a cream or oil.
The Flaw They Share
Neither provides lipids. On skin lacking oil, they will improve the sensation without compensating for the deficit.
And both need to be sealed: without an occlusive layer over them, the captured water evaporates in about thirty minutes. This is the most common mistake in routines centered on hyaluronic acid.
On Reactive Skin
This is where panthenol takes the lead. Its soothing action is felt in a few days, and it practically never poses a tolerance problem.
Hyaluronic acid is also very well tolerated, but it does not soothe: on reddened skin, it will improve comfort without acting on the reaction itself.
How to Read a Label
For hyaluronic acid: look for several forms in the list—sodium hyaluronate, hyaluronic acid—a sign of a well-formulated product.
For panthenol: its position in the list. It is effective at concentrations of 1 to 5%, which usually places it in the middle of the list.
What You Need to Know
These ingredients are cosmetic: they improve skin comfort and appearance, without treating any condition. Irritation that persists beyond a few days requires dermatological advice.
