Hyaluronic acid powder is a raw material that must be carefully weighed, dispersed, hydrated, and stored before it can become a usable gel. A concentration of 0.1 to 0.5% is often sufficient for a serum; pouring the powder directly into water creates lumps, while an aqueous preparation without a preservative system becomes vulnerable to contamination. The safety of the process is as important as the choice of molecular weight.
Before mixing: check identity and molecular weight
On the label, look for Sodium Hyaluronate or Hyaluronic Acid, the lot number, purity, and molecular weight range. A cosmetic supplier should also provide a technical data sheet and storage recommendations.
High molecular weight powders create a surface film and significantly thicken. Smaller fractions sometimes produce a less viscous gel at the same concentration. Molecular weight thus influences texture, but it does not transform a homemade preparation into a professional product.

The quality of a hyaluronic acid powder is indicated by three mentions: the exact INCI name, the molecular weight in daltons, and the origin by fermentation. Without these three lines, the price per gram means nothing.
High molecular weights remain on the surface and provide an immediate smoothing effect; low molecular weights penetrate deeper. Commercial anti-aging products often combine both, which a homemade preparation can replicate by mixing two qualities.
Calculate 0.1%, 0.3%, or 0.5% without approximation
For 100 g of product, 0.1% corresponds to 0.10 g of powder; 0.3% corresponds to 0.30 g; 0.5% corresponds to 0.50 g. A kitchen scale accurate to the gram is not sufficient. A scale accurate to the hundredth of a gram, ideally to the thousandth for small batches, is required.
For 50 g, divide the quantities by two: 0.05 g, 0.15 g, or 0.25 g. Preparing less than 50 g increases the relative error. A variation of 0.05 g becomes enormous in a 20 g batch.

The glycerin method avoids dry clumps
Weigh 0.30 g of hyaluronic acid powder for a 100 g batch at 0.3%. In a disinfected beaker, pour 3 g of vegetable glycerin. Sprinkle the powder over the glycerin, then gently crush with a spatula until a uniform paste without white pockets is formed.
Then add 96.70 g of distilled water in three parts. Mix slowly after each addition to avoid incorporating too much air. Cover the container and allow to hydrate for four to eight hours in the refrigerator, according to the technical data sheet.
When the gel is homogeneous, stir one last time without whipping. Transfer to a clean pump bottle. This method wets each particle before contact with the large quantity of water.
The sprinkling method requires more patience
Pour the distilled water into a wide container. Create a slight vortex with a spatula, then sprinkle the powder very gradually over the surface. Never add the entire dose in a single pile.
Stop mixing as soon as the powder is distributed. Cover and allow to hydrate for several hours. Small white islands gradually disappear. Too rapid mechanical mixing breaks the texture and traps bubbles.
This technique works better for a 200 g batch than for 20 g, because the water surface is wider and the powder measurement is more reliable.
Storage: water plus nutrients equals microbiological risk
An aqueous preparation is not inherently stable. Fingers, air, the container, and the spatula introduce microorganisms. Refrigeration slows their growth but does not replace a validated preservative system.
Without an appropriate preservative, prepare a very small quantity, use a pump, keep it cold, and discard it at the slightest change in odor, color, or texture. A duration of a few days is more prudent than storage for several weeks.
For commercial storage, a compatible preservative, controlled pH, and microbiological tests, including a challenge test, are required. A homemade recipe does not allow for demonstrating this robustness.
- Disinfect the work surface.
- Use distilled water.
- Do not touch the inside of the bottle.
- Note the manufacturing date.
- Discard if in doubt.
Measure pH and correct only if necessary
Sodium hyaluronate is generally compatible with a fairly wide pH range, but other ingredients and the preservative impose their own constraints. Measure with a calibrated pH meter rather than with an imprecise test strip.
For a simple serum, a pH range close to 5 to 6 is often comfortable. Do not add citric acid or soda randomly. Correction is done drop by drop with a diluted solution and a new check after homogenization.
A formula that is too acidic can become uncomfortable and degrade certain polymers. A formula that is too basic can disrupt the skin and compromise the preservative.
Add other ingredients without breaking the gel
Glycerin at 2 or 3%, betaine at 1 or 2%, or panthenol at 1% can complement humectation. Introduce them into the water before powder hydration, unless otherwise indicated by the supplier.
Electrolytes, certain extracts, and high concentrations of acids can reduce viscosity. Add only one ingredient at a time in a small 20 g trial, then observe for forty-eight hours.

Application protocol for a properly prepared gel
In the morning, cleanse gently then leave the face slightly damp. Apply a small dab of gel, spread over the cheeks, forehead, and chin, then smooth for twenty seconds.
Cover within a minute with a cream containing lipids. In dry air, a humectant used alone can leave a feeling of tightness. Finish with sunscreen.
In the evening, the same dose can precede a richer cream. The evening routine allows this gel to be applied without multiplying layers.
The term hyaluronic acid powder here precisely refers to this intention and not a related category.
A clean silicone spatula is preferable to a porous wooden spoon. The container must withstand disinfection and allow for slow mixing. Avoid wide jars that increase contact with air and fingers.
The gel may appear thicker after twenty-four hours than after four hours. Wait for complete hydration before deciding that water needs to be added. Late dilution changes all concentrations, including that of the preservative.
To prepare a 1% stock solution, weigh 1 g of powder and 99 g of water with the same precautions. This base can then be incorporated into a formula, but it must itself be properly preserved and its calculation must be included in the final balance.
A gel that is too sticky sometimes contains too much polymer or too many humectants. Reducing the concentration from 0.5 to 0.2% can improve use without eliminating the feeling of hydration. Viscosity is not a direct measure of performance.
Household equipment does not allow for measuring microbial load. A normal odor is therefore not proof of safety. When the duration or storage is uncertain, discarding the batch remains the most prudent decision.
What hyaluronic acid powder does not allow
Hyaluronic acid powder does not automatically become safe once it forms a clear gel. Transparency reveals neither contamination, nor incorrect pH, nor weighing errors.
A homemade preparation does not replace a finished product subjected to stability and microbiology controls. It should not be injected, applied to a damaged area, or stored for a long time without validation.
The risk is not weighing, it is preservation
A homemade gel is water and nutrients: without a validated preservative system, it becomes a culture medium in a few days, and transparency does not show this. This is the only serious reason to prefer an already stabilized hyaluronic acid gel — weighing, for its part, is only a matter of patience.
