Oily skin: mattify appearance and refine pores

Skin Guide · Concern

Oily skin

Oily skin produces more sebum. The goal: limit shine and tighten the appearance of pores, without aggression, with gentle actions and naturally-inspired and organic skincare.

What is it?

This profile is characterized by increased sebum production. Sebum, produced by the sebaceous glands, forms the protective film of the epidermis — but in excess, it gives a shiny appearance and makes pores more visible on the face. It is a skin type, often of hormonal or genetic origin, and not a disease.

Contrary to popular belief: excessive cleansing is counterproductive and can accentuate production (rebound effect). The goal is not to dry out the skin, but to restore a matte finish and clear complexion, while respecting the skin's protective film. Good habits are as important as good skincare.

Oily skin or combination skin? A guide

Before adopting targeted skincare, it's useful to know your skin type well. Here's a guide to distinguish three profiles that are often confused.

Criterion Oily Combination Dehydrated
Shine All over the face T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) Occasional, with tightness
Pores Visible, sometimes enlarged Enlarged, especially on the T-zone Normal appearance
Feeling Continuously oily Oily in the center, normal on the cheeks Discomfort, feeling of tightness
Objective Mattify appearance, maintain balance Balance both zones Rehydrate without rich creams

The blotting paper test: 7 days to determine your skin type

This guide can be verified at home, without any instruments: a simple pack of blotting papers is enough (a square of tissue paper also works). After cleansing, sebum gradually rises to the surface — generally, the T-zone becomes slightly shiny again within two to six hours. Observing where and when it reappears, for seven consecutive days, often says more than a quick glance in the mirror.

Self-observation Protocol · 7 days
  1. At H+2 after morning cleansing, press a blotting paper for five seconds on the forehead, without rubbing, then a second on a cheek.
  2. At H+6, repeat the exact same gesture, in the same areas.
  3. Record each observation — paper clearly translucent, barely marked, or remaining dry — four observations per day, in a notebook or on your phone.
  4. Do not change anything else: keep the same routine and skincare products all week, otherwise the reading will be skewed.
What your papers show Probable interpretation
Forehead and cheek translucent from H+2, almost every day Oily skin all over the face: focus on gentleness and consistency, not astringent products
Forehead marked at H+2, cheek only at H+6 — or not at all Combination tendency: reserve purifying treatments for the T-zone and spare the cheeks
Papers almost dry, but occasional tightness or shine Dehydration track to explore before purchasing any mattifying skincare
Very variable results from day to day Look for the context — short night, heat, too foamy cleanser the day before: shine is often circumstantial

After seven days, rely on the recurring trend: it is generally more revealing than the impression of a single morning. You can then compare this record with the NOPAL LIFE diagnosis to refine your profile.

Visible signs

  • Shine (T-zone or entire face)
  • Visible, sometimes enlarged pores, blackheads
  • Tendency to blemishes
  • Makeup that "slides off" quickly

Possible causes

  • Hormonal factors
  • Genetics
  • Over-stripping cleansing
  • Hot and humid climate
Aggravating factors
  • Stripping the epidermis
  • Skipping hydration
  • Over-exfoliating
  • Highly occlusive products

How to limit shine

The right approach comes down to two words: gentleness and regularity. Shiny skin makes you want to rub harder and more often — which is precisely the opposite of what it needs. Gentle actions, repeated at the same pace every day, do more for a clear complexion than a sporadic offensive of astringent products. A simple routine maintained over time is better than an ambitious protocol abandoned after four days.

Useful active ingredients

Some naturally derived active ingredients contribute to a matte finish and refined skin texture: niacinamide, zinc, salicylic acid (BHA), and clays (kaolin, rhassoul), in organic non-comedogenic formulas. For a detailed comparison — usual concentration, tolerance, and comfort of each active ingredient — see our guide to the causes and active ingredients for oily skin.

Your morning and evening routine

The principle consists of five steps: gentle cleansing, balancing, targeting with a mattifying serum, light hydration, then daytime protection — without ever aggressing the skin. The step-by-step details, morning and evening and in order, are gathered in our complete oily skin routine, morning and evening.

Exfoliation: exfoliate without aggressing

Two approaches coexist. Mechanical exfoliation (grains) offers immediate results but can be abrasive on reactive skin. Gentle chemical exfoliants, like salicylic acid, gently unclog pores. For this skin type, limit yourself to once or twice a week: beyond that, the barrier weakens and sebum production restarts more intensely.

Hydration & balance

Even oily skin needs hydration: a light, non-comedogenic gel-cream or hydrating emulsion helps the skin remain supple and comfortable. In the evening, gentle makeup removal (micellar water or biphasic cleanser) removes sebum and impurities while respecting the hydrolipidic film. Well-hydrated skin remains comfortable throughout the day — and it's easier to resist the temptation of overly aggressive cleansers.

Mattifying throughout the day

Between treatments, a few actions are enough to maintain a clear finish. A blotting paper dabs away shine without affecting makeup; a mist refreshes at any time. Keep a light skincare product — a dry oil can even work. These small tips prevent overdoing it, the primary cause of imbalance. Our detailed advice can be found in the Academy below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should oily skin be hydrated?
Yes. Oily skin can be dehydrated; a light, non-comedogenic moisturizing gel is recommended.
Does stripping reduce sebum?
No, quite the opposite: stripping can lead to a rebound effect and more sebum.
What active ingredient for pores?
Niacinamide helps improve the appearance of pores and shine.
Oily skin or combination skin: how to tell the difference?
Oily skin is shiny all over the face; combination skin is mostly shiny on the T-zone and remains normal to dry on the cheeks.
How to reduce blackheads?
Gentle cleansing, salicylic acid, and a clay mask help unclog pores and reduce the appearance of blackheads, without stripping.
How often should I use a clay mask?
Once a week: clay (kaolin, rhassoul) absorbs excess shine, without drying if not overused.
Are organic skincare products suitable for oily skin?
Yes, provided you choose non-comedogenic organic formulas. A light vegetable oil, such as prickly pear oil, can be suitable even for oily skin.
Oily skin and acne, is it the same thing?
No: oily skin is a skin type, acne is a condition. In case of established or painful acne, consult a dermatologist.
How to mattify the skin during the day?
A blotting paper or a purifying mist is enough during the day. Adopt a light non-comedogenic treatment—a dry oil can even be suitable—to preserve the skin's balance without overburdening it.
