Fucodian is a sulfated polysaccharide unique to brown algae: a long chain of sugars bearing negatively charged sulfate groups. These charges capture ambient moisture and retain it, like a classic humectant, and as they dry, leave a flexible and invisible film on the skin's surface. This film is what one perceives under the fingers about thirty seconds after application: the slight second-skin, satiny effect that distinguishes a marine serum from a simply aqueous serum. Its presence also explains the extract's natural viscosity — a formulator who uses it generously hardly needs a thickener.
The olive frond pigment
Fucoxanthin is the brown-orange carotenoid that masks the chlorophyll in brown algae and gives them their recognizable olive hue. In cosmetics, it is studied for its antioxidant properties, meaning its ability to limit the oxidation of other components in the formula. From Japan to Brittany, a seaweed that was primarily food
Before being put into bottles, it was for a long time a foodstuff. This past explains part of its reputation — and requires clarification.
The Japanese harvest takes place from February to June, on submerged ropes. In France, the Breton industry has been built on a closely related species: Alaria esculenta, often marketed as Atlantic wakame or Brittany wakame. Alaria grows on exposed coasts of the North Atlantic, is hand-harvested at low tide, and supplies a small organic sector. The two species share most of their profile, but they are not the same: on a label as on an INCI list, only the Latin name is authoritative.
What the food table says
From a nutritional standpoint, these leaves provide fiber, a portion of proteins and amino acids, mineral nutrients, and iodine, for a low energy intake relative to the weight consumed. One point deserves to be stated frankly: the dietary benefits of seaweed do not transpose to the skin. Eating a Japanese salad and applying a cosmetic extract are two distinct actions, with distinct effects, studied separately. This sheet therefore deals neither with health nor with diseases: it describes a cosmetic use, its actions, and its limits.

The interpretation is simple. For an enveloping film and a true mask ritual, kelp dominates. For color and an immediate glow, spirulina. In the morning only. 3 to 4 drops of marine serum on clean and still slightly damp skin, then 1 minute of pressing palms on the face — without rubbing.
In the evening, nothing changes. The goal of the week is to check tolerance, not to accumulate steps.
Add the mask. 1 to 2 times a week, in a thick layer, 10 minutes on the clock, then rinse with lukewarm water.
Apply within 3 minutes: after this time, the alginate gel has started to set and spreads poorly.
The same routine applies in the evening. Same dosage, 3 to 4 drops, followed by a cream or 2 drops of prickly pear seed oil to seal in the aqueous layer.
Always in this order: aqueous first, then oil. Reversing the order cancels out the benefits of the marine film.
Measure. Take a photo on day 28, at the same time and in the same daylight as on day 1, without makeup or filters.
What to compare: the radiance of the upper cheeks, the skin texture, and the feeling of tightness after 30 minutes.
The only reliable indicator for a short course is the 30-minute test: half an hour after application, the skin should feel comfortable, without tightness or a sticky film sensation. If it still feels tight, it's not the dose of marine active that needs to be increased — it's the lack of a fatty layer on top. If it feels sticky, reduce to 2 drops. This adjustment is better than any product change.

How to read an INCI list without making a mistake
Four tips to distinguish a product genuinely rich in marine active ingredients from one that merely bears the name on its packaging.
1. Identify the correct denomination
Look for a denomination ending in Extract. The mention Powder refers to crushed algae, which is more rustic; Callus Culture Extract refers to a cell culture, a different raw material with more standardized behavior.
2. Check the position
Components are listed in decreasing order down to 1%. An extract listed right after the aqueous phase and glycerol carries weight in the formula; listed at the very end, after perfumes and preservatives, it is mostly a marketing argument.
3. Observe the color
A generous extract will tint the formula amber or olive green. A perfectly colorless gel sold as a marine treatment has been highly diluted or decolorized — this is not a flaw in itself, but it is worth knowing before purchasing.
4. Feel the texture
Fucoidan leaves a light viscosity and a satiny finish. A perfectly liquid fluid that dries instantly probably does not contain enough polysaccharides to form the desired film.
Precautions, storage, common sense
Four practical, rarely mentioned points that make a difference in use.
The tolerance test
As with any new active ingredient, apply a pea-sized amount to the crook of your elbow and observe for 48 hours before applying to your face. In case of a reaction, discontinue use and seek professional medical advice.
Iodine, a legitimate question
Algae are naturally iodized. Cosmetic extracts are used in small doses and topically, but if you are undergoing thyroid treatment, your doctor's opinion remains the only valid answer.
Preserving the color
The carotenoid pigment is sensitive to light. Store the bottle away from direct sunlight, close it immediately, and avoid shelves exposed to steam: a marine extract ages better in a dry, dark place.
Don't overdo it
A marine active ingredient combines very well with a classic moisturizer, but there's no need to layer three serums on the same morning. A single marine step per aqueous layer is enough: beyond that, the finish becomes sticky.
