Neither alga nor plant: what it really is
The word "microalgae" is convenient, but it hides a more precise reality. Arthrospira platensis is a cyanobacterium: a single cell without a nucleus, which performs photosynthesis like a plant but is organized like a bacterium. Its filaments form a helix—hence its common name. It is cultivated in distinctly alkaline freshwaters, around pH 9 to 11, an environment so inhospitable that it discourages most competing microorganisms. Production therefore takes place in shallow ponds, open-air or under greenhouses, after which the biomass is filtered and dried.
This biology explains its composition. The filaments accumulate proteins in unusual proportions for a photosynthetic organism, as well as two families of pigments responsible for capturing light: phycobiliproteins, of which blue phycocyanin is the most abundant, and green chlorophylls. Layered, these pigments give the powder its deep blue-green color.
Most importantly, remember their difference in solubility, as it dictates all practical use. The blue pigment is water-soluble: it washes off. Chlorophyll, however, is oil-loving and can cling to a lipid film or dead skin cells. A mask left on dry skin for too long will leave a greenish film—not because the pigment "penetrates," but because it lingers on the surface. The timed protocol below neutralizes this inconvenience.
From an African lake to greenhouse ponds
Long before becoming a cosmetic ingredient, spirulina was harvested by hand. Around Lake Chad, Kanembu women have been collecting a sun-dried green paste, dihé, from the surface of alkaline ponds bordering the region's lakes for centuries. On the other side of the Atlantic, chronicles of the Spanish conquest describe a comparable harvest on Lake Texcoco, Mexico. Two continents, two alkaline lakes, the same species—and, at the time, no idea of its exact nature.
It wasn't until the mid-1960s that science made a definitive statement. It was the Belgian botanist Jean Léonard who, upon returning from a trans-Saharan mission, linked the dihé of Chad's lakes to Arthrospira platensis, one of the countless cyanobacteria that were then beginning to be classified. Organized production began in the 1970s, first in Mexico and Asia, then almost everywhere. France also got involved: dozens of producers operate indoor pond farms, with modest volumes but rare traceability. Buying French often means being able to trace the product back to the pond and know exactly where it comes from. This French spirulina is mainly sold through short distribution channels or online, in powder or flake form, and often with an organic label.
For a formulator, this controlled production changes everything. The biomass is filtered, pressed, then dried at low temperature — an essential condition to preserve the fragile blue pigment, which degrades in light and above 45°C. Spirulina dried too hot turns brownish-green and loses the blue that gives it all its aesthetic appeal. This is also what separates careful cultivation from mass production: to the naked eye, the color is often enough to decide. A final vocabulary note: cyanobacteria form a very ancient and vast group, to which we owe the oxygen of the primitive atmosphere. Our spirulina is just one species among thousands.
What the powder contains, and what it doesn't mean
On paper, the profile is impressive. The dry matter is mainly composed of proteins, in a proportion that few photosynthetic organisms reach, accompanied by free amino acids, pigments, tocopherols, beta-carotene, and minerals. It is this nutrient-rich profile that has built the reputation of spirulina and some other cultivated cyanobacteria.
However, it needs to be put into perspective as soon as we talk about skin. Applied topically, proteins do not cross the stratum corneum: the molecules are far too large. The nutrients in a powder therefore do not "nourish" the skin in the sense we understand at the dinner table, and no dosage will change that. What really matters in cosmetics are the small fractions — free amino acids, oligopeptides — and especially the pigments, whose antioxidant activity is well known to formulators. It is this activity, and not the protein content, that justifies their presence in a skincare product.
In other words: spirulina deserves its place in a skincare product, but for other reasons than those read on the packaging in the dietetics aisle. A compositional figure is not a promise of effect, and the nutrient richness of a powder says nothing about its benefit to the skin.
A scope clarification. This sheet only covers topical application. Spirulina is also sold in the food aisle, in powder or tablet form: this is a completely different subject, governed by other rules, and we do not address it here.

Quick read: if the bottle's shade matters to you, purified pigment gives a clear blue where spirulina powder turns deep, opaque green. If the ritual is paramount, only the powder allows for a mask. And if your skin tolerates rich textures poorly, the aqueous extract remains the only truly daily form of spirulina.
The four-step, timed mask protocol
The protocol we recommend to avoid the green halo — the only real difficulty with spirulina powder.
One level teaspoon of powder, about 2 g, in a glass or ceramic bowl.
Add 10 ml of hydrosol (two teaspoons) and mix for 30 seconds until a smooth, lump-free paste forms.
Thin layer on clean, dry skin, maximum 8 minutes. Beyond this, the paste dries, tightens, and is difficult to rinse off: this is when the green veil appears.
Lukewarm water — never cold, which rinses chlorophyll less effectively — until the tint completely disappears, then 3 drops of prickly pear seed oil on still-damp skin.
Three common sense guidelines. Test in the crook of your elbow 24 hours before the first application. Maintain a rhythm of once a week: this is not an active ingredient to be overused. And avoid the day before an appointment if your skin is flaking — on flakes, chlorophyll clings more and rinsing requires a good minute longer.
How to choose and store it well
Read the INCI list
Look for Spirulina Platensis Extract or Spirulina Platensis Powder. Its position in the list indicates the actual incorporation level: if cited after a fragrance or preservative, it is primarily a marketing argument.
Demand a traceable source
Identified producer, specified country of cultivation, organic certification if it matters to you. Organic spirulina cultivated in France or Europe remains the easiest source to verify. Many products sold online do not specify either the country where the spirulina was cultivated or the drying method — two pieces of information that make all the difference.
Keep it protected
Opaque container, airtight seal, room temperature. Not on the windowsill, nor in the bathroom. A powder that has turned brown has lost its blue pigment, and with it, its benefit.
Expect what's appropriate
The glow-boosting effect of a mask is immediate but temporary: it lasts for hours, not days. It's a visual recovery gesture after a short night, not a transformation that will settle in over weeks.
A final word of honesty. The available scientific literature overwhelmingly focuses on oral intake; studies examining topical application remain few. Sufficient reason to be measured in what to expect from a spirulina skincare product — and to judge, as always, on use rather than promise.

What is most often read, and what to think of it.
"The greener the treatment, the higher the dosage"
No. The shade depends on the form used and its purification level, not the dosage. Purified phycocyanin gives a clear blue even at a low dose, while a pinch of powder is enough to green an entire gel.
"It's natural, so there are no limits"
A natural active ingredient is not a neutral active ingredient. Organic spirulina does not exempt you from the patch test in the crook of the elbow, nor from the once-a-week rhythm. The properties of an ingredient do not depend on its origin.
"The effects accumulate"
In cosmetics, the effects of a mask are primarily immediate and visual. The apparent vitality gained on Sunday evening does not accumulate from one week to the next: it's maintenance, not progression.
These three shortcuts circulate all the faster because spirulina is sold online by very diverse players, from French producers to anonymous resellers. Checking the origin of products remains the most useful step — even before comparing online prices.
