Should you remove your makeup even if you're not wearing any?

If you're not wearing makeup, do you still need to wash your face at night? We'll explain why cleansing your skin is still essential, and how to do it gently.

It's a question many ask at the end of the day: if I haven't worn makeup, do I really need to wash my face before bed? The temptation to skip this step is understandable. However, the answer is more nuanced than it seems. Through this Beauty Lab guide, NOPAL LIFE enlightens you on this evening ritual, with the accuracy and touch of botanical nutrition that are dear to us.

The short answer: yes, but we're talking more about cleansing

Let's say it straight away: even without makeup, it's better to cleanse your face in the evening. The nuance lies in the vocabulary. "Makeup removal" specifically refers to removing makeup. However, makeup is only part of what the skin accumulates throughout the day. So, without foundation or mascara, the skin is not necessarily "clean" in the evening.

What you need to understand is that the essential step is not so much to remove makeup as to cleanse the skin of everything that has settled on it. And this applies whether you have worn makeup or not. The real question is therefore not "should you remove makeup without makeup," but "should you cleanse your face every evening" — and the answer is clearly yes.

Good news: without makeup, cleansing can be simpler and faster. No need to bring out the heavy artillery of a double cleanse: a gentle cleanser is usually enough to get the skin clean in less than a minute.

What the skin accumulates, even without makeup

It's easy to forget, but a day leaves many traces on the skin, regardless of makeup. Several elements justify an evening cleanse.

Pollution and fine particles. In both cities and the countryside, the air deposits micro-particles on the skin's surface that stick to it. Throughout the day, this invisible deposit can dull the complexion and promote a feeling of discomfort.

Excess sebum. The skin naturally produces sebum throughout the day. At the end of the day, this excess can give a greasy film sensation, especially on the mid-face area.

Sweat and residues. Perspiration, dust, residues from morning skincare or sunscreen: all of this accumulates and mixes on the skin's surface over the hours.

Dead skin cells. Natural skin renewal leaves dead cells on the surface which, if not removed, can dull the complexion's radiance.

All these elements combined form, in the evening, a mixed film that can suffocate the skin and deprive it of the respiration it needs to rejuvenate during the night. Removing them provides the skin with the best conditions for regeneration. This is also the case after a day of working from home: even without intense urban pollution, sebum and dead cells continue to accumulate.

Why cleansing remains beneficial for the skin

Beyond cleanliness, evening cleansing actively prepares the skin for the night, which is its privileged moment of regeneration.

Skin that breathes. A face cleared of its daily film fully benefits from nightly rest. Upon waking, the complexion appears fresher and more radiant.
