Jojoba Oil or Shea Butter: which one for your skin?

They are worlds apart, starting with their texture. Jojoba oil is very light and suitable for the face, even for oily skin; shea butter is thick and works best on truly dry areas of the body.

Comparison

Criterion Jojoba oil Shea butter
Nature liquid wax, esters vegetable fat
Texture very light thick, occlusive
Common use face, hair body, dry areas
Oily skin well tolerated to avoid
Shelf life years 1 to 2 years

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, a shrub from arid regions of North America. It is not composed of triglycerides like other vegetable oils but of wax esters.

This particularity makes it chemically very similar to human sebum, which explains its tolerance and lightness. It penetrates well, leaves a barely waxy feel, and can be stored for years without going rancid.

It is suitable for the face, body, and hair, including the scalp — few vegetable oils are as versatile. However, it provides virtually no essential fatty acids.

Two to three drops cover the face, morning and evening, as the final layer. This vegetable oil can be easily applied under sunscreen, which is not the case for all fatty substances — shea butter, for example, is not suitable for this.

This vegetable oil is also suitable for the eye contour, provided it is applied by tapping. The skin here is thin, and a single drop covers both sides.

Jojoba grows in the deserts of the American Southwest and northern Mexico, and its cultivation has extended to Argentina and Israel. Its seeds contain nearly half their weight in oil, extracted by cold pressing.

This vegetable oil was initially used as a substitute for spermaceti, whale wax, the use of which ceased with the protection of the species. This launched its large-scale cultivation.

It is also used for makeup removal: a few drops of oil on dry skin, a massage, a warm damp cloth. Its similarity to sebum dissolves makeup's fatty substances without stripping the skin.

Shea butter

Shea butter is extracted from the nuts of Vitellaria paradoxa, a tree from West Africa. Solid at room temperature, it melts on contact with the skin.

Its composition is rich in oleic acid and stearic acid, with an unsaponifiable fraction. It intensely nourishes and forms a layer that significantly limits evaporation.

This occlusiveness is its strength on very dry areas and its limit on the face: applied pure, it weighs down and bothers combination or oily skin.

The processing remains largely manual and is carried out by women's cooperatives in West Africa. The nuts are crushed, roasted, ground, then churned — a long process, which explains part of the price.

Raw shea butter shows traces of this process: an ivory to beige color, a slightly smoky smell, sometimes some impurities. These are signs of quality, not defects, and the refining process that removes them also removes some of the unsaponifiables.

Which to choose

Face, normal to oily skin: jojoba oil, without hesitation.

Elbows, heels, chapped hands: shea butter, much more effective.

Hair: jojoba oil, including at the root; butter only as a mask before washing.

Very dry skin in winter: butter on the body, jojoba oil on the face.

Using them together

On the body in winter, it works well: jojoba oil first, shea butter over it on the roughest areas.

On the face, it is rarely useful. Just one of the two, chosen according to your skin, produces more than a poorly controlled layering. The more fluid one always goes first.

The gesture and the moment

Apply to damp skin, within three minutes after showering for the body. These fatty substances retain water in the skin; they do not provide it.

A small amount of shea butter covers an area — a knee, two hands, an elbow. It melts and spreads a lot: excess remains sticky for an hour, and this is the most common mistake with this product.

For jojoba oil, two to three drops are enough for the face. Warm them between your palms and press onto the skin rather than spreading.

For chapped lips, shea butter works better than most commercial balms, and at a negligible cost. A trace is enough, reapplied during the day.

For the eye contour, jojoba oil is preferable: one drop for both sides, tapping on the bone. Shea butter is too heavy here and migrates towards the eye.

Finally, for the feet, shea butter works best as a thick layer in the evening, under a pair of cotton socks. This is a use where its occlusiveness becomes a clear advantage, whereas it is a hindrance everywhere else.

How to choose them well

For jojoba oil: Simmondsia chinensis seed oil, first cold press, dark bottle. Added essential oils do not bring any useful benefits and increase the risk of reaction.

For shea butter: unrefined preferably, ivory color, slightly smoky smell. A perfectly white and odorless butter has been refined, which removes some of its unsaponifiables. Look for Butyrospermum parkii butter.

Price poorly reflects quality in both cases. A decent jojoba oil can be found for a few euros per hundred milliliters, and unrefined shea butter often costs less than a refined version sold in designer pots.

What matters is the mention "first cold press" for one, "unrefined" for the other, and an ingredient list that fits on one line. The rest is about packaging.

Storage

Jojoba oil practically does not go rancid, thanks to its wax nature — a rare advantage among vegetable oils. Shea butter lasts one to two years, protected from heat.

A butter that has become grainy has not gone bad: it is recrystallization due to temperature variations, which disappears by warming it between the hands. A rancid smell, however, indicates a product to be discarded.

Their limits

Neither acts on wrinkles, spots, or deep texture. They are comfort treatments, and they fulfill this role without exceeding it.

Neither protects against radiation, despite what is written about the natural indices of shea butter. Daily sun protection remains essential.

To conclude

These products are cosmetics and improve skin comfort without treating any specific condition. Deep chapping or dryness that resists appropriate treatments warrants medical advice.
