Combining jojoba oil and shea butter: the method

Jojoba oil penetrates, shea butter seals. These two fats complement each other more in texture than in composition, and their combination makes sense on the body in winter rather than on the face.

Key points

  • Order: jojoba oil first, then shea butter.
  • Where: the body, rough areas, rarely the entire face.
  • When: within three minutes after showering, on damp skin.
  • Quantity: a pea-sized amount of shea butter per area.

What each brings

Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis. Composed of wax esters rather than triglycerides, jojoba oil is chemically similar to human sebum: it penetrates quickly, leaves no film, and is suitable for all skin types, including oily skin.

Shea butter comes from the nuts of Vitellaria paradoxa, a tree from West Africa. Solid at room temperature, shea butter melts on contact with the skin and remains on the surface. Its composition of oleic and stearic acids, with a fraction of unsaponifiables, makes it a nourishing and frankly occlusive fat.

Jojoba oil contains almost no essential fatty acids; shea butter contains more. This is the real fundamental difference between these two products, beyond texture.

This vegetable oil, however, retains the advantage of simplicity: daily use, on both the face and body, without precautions. Hydration, on the other hand, comes from neither of them — they retain water without providing any.

Regarding ingredients, both are of natural origin and can be read in one line. Quality vegetable oil and unrefined butter are recognized by this above all.

Order and application

The most fluid first. Jojoba oil penetrates in two minutes; shea butter, applied over it, forms the layer that limits evaporation.

Reversing this would be like creating an occlusive barrier that jojoba oil would have to overcome. It wouldn't succeed, and the first application would be wasted.

Apply to damp skin: these fats retain skin's water, they don't provide it. On the body, the useful window is narrow — the three minutes following a shower.

Where this combination works

On the body in winter, on chapped hands, elbows, and heels. Jojoba oil prepares, shea butter seals, and the skin retains its water for much longer.

On the face, jojoba oil is almost always sufficient. Shea butter makes it heavy, except in very small quantities on an isolated dry area, and combination or oily skin will not tolerate it well.

Regular use matters more than a generous and infrequent application. Two drops of jojoba oil every evening do more than a nourishing treatment applied once a week.

For soft skin that lacks comfort in winter, this combination is easily sufficient. For very dry skin all year round, a humectant will also be needed beforehand: these treatments do not replace hydration, they preserve it.

Quantities

Two to three drops of jojoba oil for the face, more for the body. A pea-sized amount of shea butter per area: one knee, two hands, one elbow.

Shea butter melts and spreads a lot. Excess remains sticky for an hour and ends up on clothes — this is the most common mistake with this product, and the right amount is one that disappears in two to three minutes.

How to choose them well

For jojoba oil: Simmondsia chinensis seed oil, first cold press, dark bottle. Its exceptional stability allows for large formats without risk of rancidity.

For shea butter: unrefined preferably, ivory color, slightly smoky odor. Perfectly white and odorless butter has been refined, which removes some of its unsaponifiables.

Storage

Jojoba oil hardly goes rancid, thanks to its wax nature. Shea butter lasts one to two years, protected from heat.

Shea butter that has become grainy has not spoiled: it is a recrystallization linked to temperature variations, which disappears when warmed between the hands. A rancid odor, however, indicates a product to be discarded.

Limitations

This combination nourishes and protects, without acting on wrinkles, spots, or deep texture. It also does not protect against radiation: daily sun protection remains essential.

When to consult

These products are cosmetics and improve skin comfort without treating any condition. Deep chapping or dryness that resists appropriate care warrants medical advice.
