Facial oil: what it's really for and how to use it

What is a face oil really for, which skin type is it best for, and how do you apply it? The Nopal Life guide to choosing and and using your oil without a greasy finish.

Botanical beauty has its preferred gestures, and oil-based skincare is undoubtedly the most iconic. Long reserved for very dry skin, this galenic form has fully regained its place in modern routines — provided you understand what it truly offers. Through this Beauty Lab guide, NOPAL LIFE helps you grasp what it's for, who it's designed for, and how to use it without any greasy effect, with the precision and botanical nourishment that are so dear to us.

What is this treatment really for?

A vegetable oil is a nourishing product composed of fatty substances — fatty acids, antioxidant vitamin E, sometimes carotenoids. Its primary role is not to provide water, but to retain it: by forming a thin layer of comfort on the surface, it helps limit evaporation and preserve the skin's protective film.

This is a crucial nuance, and it changes everything about how it's used. Water hydrates; fatty substances nourish and seal. This step brings suppleness, comfort, and radiance, and helps the skin stay soft longer. Rich in antioxidant vitamin E, it also helps protect against external aggressions responsible for dullness and loss of elasticity throughout the day.

This galenic form therefore occupies a very specific place in the routine: that of the final nourishing touch, which seals in the aqueous treatments applied before it. It does not oppose cream or serum: it complements them, providing that dimension of nourishment that lighter formulas do not always cover. This is also why a good choice can transform the comfort of a routine without making it more complex.

Who is it designed for?

It's often believed that it's reserved for dry skin. This is partly true, but the reality is more nuanced: almost all skin types can benefit from it, by adjusting the quantity and timing.

Dry and mature skin are the primary beneficiaries: they lack fatty substances, and this treatment provides them with exactly the comfort and suppleness they need. Normal skin types appreciate it in the evening or in winter, when the cold weakens the skin barrier. Dehydrated skin, regardless of type, uses it to seal in a humectant treatment and prevent evaporation. Finally, combination to oily skin can use it occasionally, in very small quantities on the driest areas, choosing fine and quickly absorbed textures.

The key is to adapt the gesture to your skin type, but also to the season and time of day: the same skin does not have the same needs in the middle of winter as in the middle of summer. If you're unsure, the Nopal Life Skin Intelligence™ diagnostic will guide you in two minutes to the most relevant textures.

How to use it correctly

This galenic form has an unfair reputation for a "greasy effect". In reality, poorly dosed or poorly applied, any product can leave a film. Used correctly, it blends in and leaves the skin supple, never shiny. Here's how.

The right amount: 2 to 3 drops. For the face, two to three are almost always enough. This is a small amount, and it's intentional: the material is covering, and an excess remains on the surface. Start small, even if you need to add more if your skin still feels tight.

The right time: as the last step. It is applied after aqueous textures and serum, and often after or instead of cream depending on your needs. From thinnest to richest: being more covering, it always seals. Applied too early, it would prevent aqueous treatments from penetrating.

The right gesture: warm and press. Place the drops in the palm of your hands, warm for a few seconds between your palms, then gently press onto your face from the center outwards. Do not rub: deposit, envelop. This gesture, almost a treatment in itself, helps the product blend evenly and transforms the application into a true comfort ritual.

On slightly damp skin. Applied to skin that is still a little damp, or over an aqueous serum, it seals in moisture better and limits the greasy sensation.

Adjust according to the season. One more drop in winter, one less in summer: the dosage adjusts throughout the year and according to needs.
