Biphasic makeup remover: ingredients and proper use

A bi-phase makeup remover combines an aqueous phase and an oily phase that separate when at rest and then temporarily mix when the bottle is shaken. The oily part dissolves pigments, waxes, and water-resistant filters, while the aqueous phase improves comfort. It is particularly useful for waterproof makeup and the eye contour area.

Why the two phases separate

Water and oil do not spontaneously mix without an emulsifier. In a bi-phase product, the separation is intentional and visible. After ten seconds of shaking, small oil droplets disperse in the water then gradually regroup.

A bi-phase makeup remover must therefore be shaken before each use. If the separation never returns or if an odor changes, check the date and the period after opening. The bottle must remain tightly closed to limit contamination and evaporation.

What the oily phase dissolves

Water-resistant mascaras contain waxes, pigments, and hydrophobic polymers. A light oil or a cosmetic ester dissolves them better than water alone. This affinity reduces the need to rub the eyelashes.

The aqueous phase may contain glycerin, panthenol, or floral water. For sensitive eyes, prefer a fragrance-free formula tested for the eye contour area.

Shake the bottle for ten seconds. Soak a very soft reusable cotton pad or two discs, close your eye, and hold for fifteen to twenty seconds. Slide downwards, without back-and-forth movements.

For the complexion, use a separate disc and work from the center outwards. For long-lasting lipstick, hold the cotton for ten seconds then wipe gently. A single thick application is better than five dry passes.

Homemade bi-phase: stability and preservation

Mixing oil and water in a household bottle creates a product without validated preservation. The aqueous phase can allow microbial growth. A homemade recipe should not be kept for several weeks or applied near the eyes.

Prefer a finished product with a preservative system, controlled pH, and suitable packaging. Bi-phase makeup remover is seemingly simple, but the eye contour requires rigorous safety.

Double cleansing or single step

After full waterproof makeup, use the bi-phase on the eyes then a balm or oil on the face. Emulsify, rinse, and finish with a gentle cleanser if necessary. After light makeup, targeted bi-phase may suffice for the eyes.

Clean the edge of the bottle if product accumulates there and do not touch the nozzle with the cotton pad. A pump or reducer cap limits contact. Replace the product if the odor, color, or separation changes significantly.

A cotton pad that is too dry forces multiple passes. Sufficiently soak the entire surface in contact with the eyelashes, without letting the product run. The waiting time then becomes more effective than pressure.

Kohl applied to the inner waterline requires great caution. Do not try to insert the cotton pad under the eyelid. Remove what is at the edge of the eyelashes and rinse if residues get into the eye.

The bottle should be shaken until a temporarily homogeneous color is obtained. Use it immediately, as the phases begin to separate in a few minutes. Shake again if you then remove makeup from the other eye.

Its effectiveness comes mainly from dissolving resistant makeup and contact time. The correct technique is to place, wait, and slide, not to rub quickly.

What comes after the oily phase
