Salicylic acid barely oxidizes—it precipitates. The sign to look out for is not a color or an odor, but a deposit at the bottom of the bottle.
A chemically stable molecule
Unlike retinol or vitamin C, salicylic acid is highly resistant to light and oxygen. It is a simple and robust molecule, which is why it is found in products sold without special packaging.
Its fragility lies elsewhere: it is poorly soluble in water. An aqueous formula keeps it in solution thanks to solubilizers and a precise pH. When this balance is disrupted, the acid comes out of solution.
Precipitation, and how to recognize it
White crystals at the bottom of the bottle, persistent cloudiness, a deposit that does not redissolve after shaking. This is the most common sign for this product and is visible to the naked eye.
Cold accelerates it: a tonic left in an unheated room in winter, or stored in the refrigerator, precipitates faster. When brought back to room temperature, it sometimes becomes clear again; if it remains cloudy after twenty-four hours, the acid is no longer evenly distributed.
What this changes in use
The risk is not irritation but inconsistency. Part of the acid is concentrated at the bottom, the rest of the solution is depleted: you apply too much sometimes, too little others. On a routine that relies on regularity, this is a real problem.
A decrease in effectiveness for no apparent reason often comes from this. Before increasing the concentration or changing products, it is worth checking the bottom of the bottle.
How long it keeps
Twelve months after opening for a well-formulated product, six for a homemade or poorly stabilized product. The "period after opening" printed on the packaging gives the official guideline, and it is reliable for this active ingredient.
At room temperature, between fifteen and twenty-five degrees Celsius. This is one of the few skincare products that should not be put in the refrigerator: cold does not protect it, it makes it precipitate.
Remaining precautions for use
An old but clear bottle remains usable. A new but cloudy bottle is not. Appearance takes precedence over the date, which is the opposite of the usual rule and is worth remembering.

The case of products that contain little of it
In a rinse-off cleanser, the question hardly arises: the contact time is short and the concentration is low. In a tonic or serum left on the skin, it arises fully.

The effects of an irregular distribution
When the acid precipitates, the concentration actually applied varies from day to day. On blemish-prone skin, this results in an alternation: days with no visible effect, then unexpected irritation when a more concentrated portion is applied.
This irregularity is more problematic than a clear loss of effectiveness, because it confuses the interpretation. The reaction is attributed to the skin, to fatigue, or to another product, when the bottle is the cause.
Precautions for use, whether the product is fresh or not
Two to three applications per week to start, then daily at a low concentration. Avoid combining it with a second acid or a retinoid on the same evening: the risk of irritation accumulates and cannot be undone.
For sensitive skin, a concentration of 0.5% is sufficient and better tolerated over time. For oily skin, 2% is the maximum for domestic use. These guidelines are valid for a product in good condition; for a cloudy bottle, they no longer mean anything.
The real risk, and the one we imagine
The risk is not damaging the skin with an old product—salicylic acid does not become more aggressive with age. The risk is losing weeks with a product that no longer works, or increasing the dose to compensate.
The usual precautions remain valid: no application to damaged skin, no extensive use by pregnant women without the advice of a healthcare professional, and daily sun protection. These are rules for use, not rules for preservation.
Recognizing a product suitable for long-term use
An opaque or tinted bottle, a pump rather than a screw cap, a format proportionate to the frequency of use. A large bottle of a product used twice a week will spend more time opened than on the skin.
The ingredient list also provides information: the presence of solubilizers and a buffer system indicates a formula designed to remain stable. Their absence, in an aqueous salicylic acid product, heralds rapid precipitation.
