The order of application depends entirely on the form of zinc, and getting it wrong is costly. With a zinc PCA in a serum, niacinamide goes first. With a sunscreen containing zinc oxide, the latter is always applied as the very last layer, without exception.
Two scenarios
| Zinc form | Order | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PCA in serum | niacinamide then the serum | two aqueous active ingredients, order is flexible |
| Mineral sunscreen | niacinamide, cream, then filter | the filter must remain on the surface |
With a mineral serum
This is the simplest case. Both are water-soluble and applied early: apply niacinamide to damp skin, then the second serum, then a light cream.
This combination is for oily skin. Niacinamide works on sebum production and strengthens the skin barrier; the mineral complements it in the same area.
With zinc oxide sunscreen
Here, the order allows for no exceptions. A mineral filter works by reflecting radiation from the surface: applied under a cream or oil, it disperses and loses some of its effectiveness.
The correct sequence: niacinamide on damp skin, cream, then the sunscreen as the very last layer. Allow one minute between each step to avoid mixing.
For enlarged pores
This is the most common expectation for this duo, and it needs to be clarified. Niacinamide acts on sebum production, which refines the appearance of enlarged pores in six to eight weeks.
It does not close them: the diameter of a pore is largely constitutional. What changes is their visibility — a less congested pore is less noticeable, which is a real and more modest result than the usual promise.
PCA works in the same direction, without adding anything further on this specific point.
What is achieved relates to the appearance of pores, not their size: an unclogged pore looks finer. Niacinamide acts on this morning and evening, while zinc only plays a role in formulas where it is present as a mineral filter.
For blemish-prone skin, this action is coupled with an effect on excess sebum and skin texture. Pigment spots fall under a different, longer timeline, and require daily protection much more than the active ingredient itself.
Strengthening the skin barrier
This is the main benefit of niacinamide, and one that the mineral does not provide. A better supported stratum corneum loses less water and reacts less to aggressions.
For oily skin stripped by overly aggressive care, strengthening it is often more important than treating shine. This breaks the cycle.
The routine, day and night
In the morning: gentle cleansing, niacinamide on damp skin, a light texture, then a sunscreen — with zinc oxide if your skin is reactive.
At night: cleansing, niacinamide, the mineral serum if you use one, then your moisturizer.
Nothing else is needed. A short routine maintained every day surpasses a heavy routine applied intermittently.
For which skin types
Oily and combination skin: the most favorable type.
Sensitive skin: zinc oxide is one of the best tolerated filters, and niacinamide improves tolerance over time.
Dry skin: niacinamide is suitable, but the final cream will provide comfort.
Mature skin: sunscreen takes precedence over everything else.
Introduce niacinamide gradually
A slight initial warming sensation is possible for the first few days. Every other evening for a week, then daily if all goes well.
Two to five percent is sufficient. Ten percent formulas do not perform better and increase the frequency of these initial rednesses.
A precaution about oral zinc
Zinc as a dietary supplement is not within the scope of this page. Its intake is not trivial, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek medical advice before any supplementation.
Niacinamide as the foundation of the routine
In this combination, niacinamide does the foundational work. It improves barrier function, acts on sebum production, and evens out skin tone.
Two to five percent is sufficient, twice a day, all year round. Niacinamide is not photosensitizing and imposes no frequency constraints.
How to apply niacinamide
A few drops on clean, slightly damp skin, spread without rubbing. Wait one minute before the next layer.
Introduce it every other day for the first week: a slight initial warming sensation is possible and harmless. Then switch to daily use.
A complete four-step routine
Cleanse, apply niacinamide, seal with a texture adapted to your skin type, protect in the morning. Nothing else is needed to start.
An additional active ingredient is then added, once this base has been maintained for two months. The most common mistake is to stack before the foundation is in place.
What niacinamide brings to sensitive skin
Improved tolerance over time. Skin that receives niacinamide daily tolerates cold, cleansing, and subsequently added active ingredients better.
This benefit is not visible in a mirror: it is measured by what stops being a problem. It is the least spectacular and most useful of niacinamide's effects.
On hydration
Niacinamide improves water retention without adding it. Hydration comes from the next layer, and from a humectant serum if your skin feels tight.
For oily skin, do not skip this step: many oily skins are actually dehydrated, and a lack of water perpetuates the imbalance.
A simple routine that lasts
Cleanse, apply niacinamide to slightly damp skin, seal, protect in the morning. This base is suitable for the vast majority of skin types.
Niacinamide imposes no seasonal or frequency constraints, making it a convenient foundation. You then add to it, once the base has been established for two months.
On shine, what is realistic
Niacinamide acts on what the skin secretes, which helps limit shine in six to eight weeks. It is gradual and measurable by touch rather than in the mirror.
It does not suppress production: skin that produces a lot will continue to do so, simply less noticeably. Saying this avoids much disappointment.
What you need to know
These products are cosmetics and act on the appearance and comfort of the skin, without treating conditions. Established acne requires dermatological advice.
