Black seed oil is not handled like other vegetable oils. It is potent, odorous, and should be used sparingly. Aloe vera, on the other hand, is precisely used to make it suitable for daily use.
Why black seed oil should be used sparingly
The oil extracted from Nigella sativa seeds contains thymoquinone, an aromatic compound absent from other common vegetable oils. This is what gives it its characteristic scent and its reputation, and it is also what necessitates caution.
The practical rule: ten to twenty percent black seed oil in a neutral oil, never pure on a large area. For the face, this represents one drop of black seed oil for four or five drops of carrier oil. Used pure, it irritates a significant number of skin types.
What aloe vera changes in the mixture
Aloe vera gel hydrates the surface before the oil, which limits the latter's penetration and makes the application more comfortable. It also provides a light texture that compensates for the heaviness of the fatty substance.
To get the most out of the combination, do not mix the two in your palm: an improvised emulsion between an aqueous gel and an oil will not hold, and you will get a texture that separates. Apply them one after the other.
The three-step protocol
First, apply aloe vera gel to clean skin, in a thin layer. Second, wait one minute. Third, apply diluted black seed oil, dabbing it on the affected areas with short presses rather than on the entire face.
Initially, every other evening, then daily if tolerated. Two to three months are needed to judge: this is a long time, and it is the real timeframe for this type of combination.
The question of smell
It is the main obstacle to use. Black seed oil has a strong, peppery and bitter note that dilution attenuates without eliminating it. Evening application resolves the difficulty for most people.
An odorless black seed oil is a refined oil, therefore impoverished. The choice is thus between user comfort and product richness, and there is no universally good answer.
Storage and selection
Cold-pressed, in an opaque bottle, with the Latin name on the label. Six to twelve months after opening, keep cool. Our black seed oil factsheet specifies buying guidelines.
As for aloe vera, the gentle cleansing mousse with aloe vera prepares the skin without stripping it, and the purifying cleansing gel with aloe vera is suitable for skin that does not tolerate rich textures well. Both are used before the oily step.
