Aloe vera or shea butter: which to choose?

These are the two extremes of natural cosmetics: one is almost exclusively water, the other almost exclusively fat. Aloe vera gel soothes and moisturizes. Shea butter protects and retains moisture. Layered together, they provide everything skin needs daily.

Two textural extremes

Criterion Aloe vera Shea butter
Nature aqueous gel solid vegetable butter
Composition 98% water oleic and stearic acids
Role soothes, moisturizes protects, limits evaporation
Sensation fresh, light rich, enveloping
Face all skin types dry skin only
Body after sun exposure excellent, generous use

What aloe vera gel provides

Moisture and immediate soothing. Its complex sugars form a light film that slightly slows down evaporation, without stopping it.

This is its weakness and you need to know it: used alone on dry skin, the effect does not last more than half an hour. Aloe vera gel is a good comfort care, not an autonomous hydration solution.

What shea butter provides

Remarkably effective surface protection. Dominated by oleic acid and stearic acid, it forms a layer that significantly slows down water loss.

Its unsaponifiable fraction also gives it soothing qualities appreciated on areas mistreated by the cold. Raw, unrefined butter retains more of these qualities than refined butter, which is whiter and odorless.

Which to choose

Skin heated, reddened by the sun: aloe vera gel, for immediate relief.

Dry, rough skin in winter: shea butter, without hesitation.

Oily or combination skin, on the face: the gel. Shea butter is usually too rich for this.

Body, hands, heels: shea butter, at a cost that allows generous use.

Layering them: the most appropriate use

This is where the duo makes perfect sense, as each exactly compensates for the other's weakness.

1. A thin layer of aloe vera gel on clean skin.

2. Time to put the bottle down and pick up the jar.

3. A small amount of shea butter, warmed between the fingers until fluid.

The butter then seals in the moisture provided by the gel. Without the gel, it evaporates; without the butter, the gel has nothing to retain.

The gesture that changes everything with shea butter

Applied cold, it remains in patches and penetrates poorly. Warmed for about ten seconds between the fingers until it becomes fluid, it spreads in a thin, even layer.

This detail explains most bad experiences with this product — much more than its quality or origin.

On the face: with discernment

Shea butter is not suitable for all skin types on the face. For combination skin, reserve it for areas that feel tight and use the gel alone elsewhere.

For blemish-prone skin, it's best to avoid it on the T-zone and prefer a light cream. Aloe vera gel, on the other hand, is suitable for all areas.

After sun exposure: the protocol

This is the best-known use of the gel, and it is justified. Apply it generously to clean, cool skin, leave on for two to three minutes, then apply a thin layer of shea butter if the skin still feels tight.

A painful sunburn or one accompanied by blisters is not a cosmetic concern: it requires medical advice, regardless of the product.

Choosing your two products

For the gel: aloe vera juice or gel at the top of the ingredient list, fragrance-free if your skin reacts. The outer layer of the leaf contains aloin, which is irritating, and which formulated products remove.

For the butter: the mention raw or unrefined, fragrance-free, in an opaque container.

What you need to know

These treatments are cosmetic and improve skin comfort and appearance, without treating any condition. Deep chapped skin or burns require medical advice.

Two very different weights

Shea butter is occlusive: precious on rough patches in winter, excessive on the entire face the rest of the year. An aloe vera moisturizing cream covers daily needs, and shea butter remains a targeted treatment rather than a base.
