Frangipani: The Sun Flower

An emblematic tropical flower with a captivating fragrance, frangipani (Plumeria rubra) is as much an ornamental tree as it is a precious cosmetic active ingredient. Carried by this sun-loving shrub, its flower helps soothe and soften the skin's appearance, while enveloping the product in an exotic sensory signature of great elegance.

Frangipani, a tropical tree

Before becoming a skincare active, frangipani is a shrub: Plumeria rubra, native to Central America and now cultivated throughout the tropical world, from Polynesian gardens to Mediterranean terraces. This plant with a sculptural habit forms a small tree with thick branches and shiny foliage. Its elongated leaves fall during the dry season, then flowering resumes with the return of warmth: from late spring to summer, the tree is covered with five-petaled flowers, white, pink or golden, whose fragrance is strongest at dusk.

In milder regions, frangipani is grown in the ground; elsewhere, it is kept in pots to protect it from frost and brought out into the sun during warm weather. It loves bright light, well-draining soil, and propagates easily from branch cuttings. Its slow growth and longevity have made it, throughout the tropics, a tree of temples, thresholds, and flower leis — a plant laden with symbolism as much as scent.

It is from this blooming flower, hand-picked when its fragrance is most intense, that cosmetics derive their precious forms. It is found in the culture of monoi, where tiare and frangipani flowers are macerated in coconut oil according to Polynesian know-how passed down from generation to generation.

Growing the plant at home

In our climates, frangipani is grown in pots to follow the sun and be brought indoors for winter. Here are some care tips to see it rebloom every year.

Sun & location

This plant requires full light: full sun in the garden during summer, a veranda or very bright room indoors the rest of the year.

Pot & soil

A pot with drainage holes and very well-draining soil (potting mix + sand or pozzolana) protect the roots from excess water, the shrub's number one enemy.

Watering

Generous and spaced out in spring and during flowering, greatly reduced in winter when leaves fall and growth stops.

Wintering

Sensitive to cold, it should be brought indoors away from frost in autumn. It overwinters dormant, almost without water, and restarts with the warmth.

Cuttings & propagation

A cut branch left to dry for a few days roots easily: this is the simplest way to propagate it.

Floral extract Flowers infused then filtered, in an aqueous or glycerin base Subtle, light floral Mists, lotions and creams for sensitive skin
Oily macerate Flowers macerated for several days in a vegetable oil (monoï style) Rich, solar, enveloping Massage oils and nourishing body care

NOPAL LIFE formulation guide: in soothing care, we favor extract or macerate, dosed for comfort and sensoriality rather than for the power of the fragrance.
