From cotton plant to skincare active

Cotton comes from the cotton plant (Gossypium herbaceum), a shrub cultivated for millennia for its fibers. A white lint forms around each seed: this fiber, almost pure cellulose, is one of the softest materials nature offers us. In cosmetics, it's not the textile fiber that's used, but the seed — pressed into oil — and the extract derived from the plant, two forms that retain the fiber's signature softness.

Cotton is best known for its textile uses: its immaculate white lint is spun, woven into canvas, poplin or jersey, and has clothed humanity since antiquity. This same fiber, chosen for its silky surface and breathability, has made cotton fabric a symbol of comfort against the skin. It is precisely this tactile quality that cosmetics seek in the seed and extract of the plant.

Organic cultivation, carried out without synthetic chemical treatments, preserves the quality of the raw material and limits residues. Depending on the producing countries and the harvesting method, the characteristics of the fiber and oil vary — a criterion that NOPAL LIFE integrates into the selection of its plant products, just as it does for its prickly pear.

The lipid profile of cotton seed oil

Indicative fatty acid composition (Codex Alimentarius, standard CXS 210 for named vegetable oils).

Fatty acid Indicative proportion Cosmetic interest
Linoleic acid (omega-6, C18:2) 47–58% affinity with skin film, melting texture
Palmitic acid (C16:0) 21–27% maintains protective veil on the surface
Oleic acid (omega-9, C18:1) 14–22% skin suppleness and comfort
Stearic acid (C18:0) 2–3% creamy texture
Tocopherols (vitamin E) traces natural antioxidant that helps preserve the oil

This dominance of linoleic acid explains the light feel of cotton oil: it penetrates quickly, without a greasy finish, making it ideal for skin seeking comfort without heaviness.

Why NOPAL LIFE uses cotton

Cotton is softness made active. We prioritize quality fiber, from careful cultivation, because the feel of an active ingredient depends first on its raw material. This protective tenderness aligns with the mission of our prickly pear: the cotton plant fiber is ideal for enveloping delicate skin with comfort, without ever being aggressive.
