Understanding Your Skin Type

A question that deserves more than a checkbox

Three online questionnaires, three different answers, and products purchased for three profiles that have nothing to do with each other. What's missing is never information — beauty magazines publish it every month — but a reproducible observation method. Here's one: a timed protocol, a numerical grid, and a table that translates each result into actions. Materials: a gentle cleanser, blotting paper, a mirror, a watch. Cosmetic observation, never medical diagnosis.

What the concept precisely means

The four classic types are based on one observable parameter: the amount of sebum deposited on the surface. Everything else — temporary redness, January tightness, cyclical imperfections, fine lines due to heating — falls under skin condition, which changes in days while the type changes over years.

  • Normal skin — stable complexion from morning to evening, no tightness or noticeable shine, discreet pores except on the nose.
  • Dry skin — discomfort returns quickly after cleansing, the texture appears fine and matte to the touch.
  • Combination skin — forehead, nose, and chin shine during the day while the cheeks remain normal or slightly uncomfortable.
  • Oily skin — shine returns everywhere, including the cheeks, with dilated pores on the sides of the nose and recurrent blackheads.

Two qualifiers are added without replacing them: sensitive (reactivity to contact, temperature, certain active ingredients) and mature (signs of aging, including wrinkles). One can have combination and sensitive skin, or dry and mature skin — hence the multi-faceted profile advocated by our brand.

Type, phototype, condition: three different concepts

The most common confusion is between skin type and phototype. The latter describes the reaction to the sun — skin tone, ease of tanning, sun-induced redness — on the Fitzpatrick scale, from I to VI. This has no relation to sebum production: a very fair phototype II can be associated with a marked oily tendency. The division of roles is simple: phototype determines sun strategy, type determines textures, and condition determines what needs adjusting this month.

The blotting paper protocol

Here is the method used to build the Academy's profiles: thirty minutes, repeated identically from one season to another.

Timed procedure

  1. T = 0. Cleanse face for a maximum of 30 seconds, rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry. Do not apply any skincare product afterward.
  2. T + 10 min. Note a sensation, from 0 to 3: 0 = no discomfort, 3 = distinct tightness that makes smiling uncomfortable.
  3. T + 30 min. Press a blotting paper square for 20 seconds on each of the 5 zones: forehead, nose, chin, right cheek, left cheek. Do not rub.
  4. Count. Place the squares on a white sheet. A square is "marked" when a translucent stain appears against the light.
  5. T + 120 min (optional). The gap between 30 and 120 minutes differentiates an oily tendency from a normal profile, which is slower to reconstitute its surface film.

Observation benchmark established by the brand, not a standardized instrument: its merit is its consistency, which allows for assessing seasonal evolution. Conditions: in the morning; no exfoliation or mask within 48 hours; same phase of the cycle if comparing two measurements; room at a stable temperature, because 26°C and 17°C do not yield the same blotting paper results.

The six false positives that can skew results

This is the part that questionnaires omit, and it explains most contradictory results. Check that none of these factors were present on the day of the test.

The two axes not measured by blotting paper

Dehydration is not dryness

Dry skin lacks oil; dehydrated skin lacks hydration. They feel similar to the touch but are addressed in opposite ways. Oily skin can also be dehydrated, especially in those who frequently use mattifying products. Cheek pinch, 10 seconds: pinch between thumb and index finger and observe against the light. If fine lines appear in the fold and take more than a second to disappear, the hydration axis requires your attention.

Sensitivity and the skin barrier

The skin barrier is the most superficial layer of the epidermis: corneous cells bound by lipids, which limit water loss and filter what enters. If comfortable, it makes treatments well-tolerated; if weakened — by overly strong cleansers, too frequent exfoliation, cold weather, or too many active ingredients — it can make the same routine uncomfortable overnight.

Sensitivity is therefore not a fifth skin type, but a level of reactivity that overlays the others. Signs to look for include: tingling when rinsing, diffuse redness lasting more than 15 minutes, or an unexplained sensation of heat. If these recur with each measurement, note them next to the result: they will influence your choices more than the category itself. Redness that lasts several days, a lesion, or pain are not related to any cosmetic reading — consult a healthcare professional.

One constant runs through all lines: daily sun protection, as soon as your routines touch on radiance, spots or wrinkles. In the evening, the order remains the same for everyone: makeup removal if necessary, a single targeted active ingredient, comfort cream, vegetable oil as a finishing touch.

Where to place prickly pear seed oil

It's the brand's signature active ingredient, and that's precisely why we refuse to make it a universal answer. Its role is precise, as a finishing touch in the evening: nourishment, suppleness and visible radiance where they are lacking. It replaces neither a moisturiser nor sun protection. It makes perfect sense for dry, mature or tired skin types, and for combination skin applied to the cheeks only. For oily skin, it should be evaluated: one drop, two evenings a week, observing imperfections for two weeks before extending use. Case study: the mistake of four new products

Salima is looking for radiance, a more even skin texture, and comfort. In three weeks, she introduces four products: exfoliating serum, vitamin C, vegetable oil, and a cream rich in active ingredients. Five days later, her skin feels tight in the morning and red when rinsing; she concludes "I'm sensitive" and stops everything. None of these products are bad: what's missing is the method. With four variables introduced together, it's impossible to know which one is causing the problem – and the conclusion is probably wrong, the barrier simply being weakened by the accumulation.

  1. Days 1 to 14. Minimal foundation: gentle cleanser, hydration, cream, sun protection. No active ingredients.
  2. Day 15. Blotting paper protocol: the reading is most reliable, as no active ingredients interfere with it.
  3. Days 15 to 28. Only one active ingredient reintroduced – the one that addresses her priority concern.
  4. Day 28. Evaluate comfort, radiance, and reactivity. If all is well, prickly pear oil is introduced as a finishing touch in the evening.
  5. Days 29 to 42. Second active ingredient – or status quo, a perfectly valid decision.

Six weeks seems long compared to promises of results in seven days. However, it is the only rhythm that isolates variables one by one, and therefore the only one that produces actionable information.

How to distinguish a combination profile from an oily profile?

Are skin type and phototype the same thing?

Should the test be redone after changing cleanser?

Yes, but not immediately: allow 10 days of regular use before re-measuring. This is the time after which the blotting paper no longer reflects the old formula rather than the new one.
