Loss of Radiance
A dull complexion rarely comes from a single cause. This chapter provides a quantified reading grid, a comparison of active ingredients, and a dated 28-day protocol to regain a radiant face — without excessive promises or product accumulation.
Three components, not just one
Glow is not a substance; it's an optical phenomenon: a regular surface reflects light, while an irregular surface disperses it. Three components determine it.
| Component | What you see | What makes it vary | Most direct lever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reflection | Cheekbone catches the light, or remains matte. | Water retained on the surface, hydrolipidic film. | Hydrate: hyaluronic acid then cream. |
| Uniformity | Dark areas, diffuse redness, contrasts. | Sun, history of spots, season. | Daily sun protection, antioxidants. |
| Texture | Rough texture, makeup that catches. | Cell renewal, dead cells. | Gentle, spaced exfoliation, never daily. |
A randomly purchased routine disappoints because it targets the wrong component.
Six causes, six time scales
| Cause | Visible sign | Improvement time | Priority action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dehydration | Tightness, dull complexion upon waking | 3 to 7 days | Serum on damp skin + cream within 60 seconds |
| Harsh cleansing | Discomfort 10 min after rinsing with water | 5 to 10 days | One full wash per day, in the evening |
| Over-exfoliation | Shine without depth, tingling | 2 to 4 weeks | Stop all acids, return to basics |
| Sun exposure | Uneven complexion, more pronounced spots | 3 to 6 months | SPF every morning, all year round |
| Lifestyle (sleep, diet, tobacco) | Tired face by 4 PM | 1 to 3 weeks | Change only one parameter at a time |
| Skin aging | Thinner skin, established wrinkles | Continuous maintenance | Hydration, nutrition, antioxidants, SPF |
Three of these six lines concern the routine itself: most often, you gain radiance by removing an excess, not by adding a treatment.
The NOPAL Radiance Index: measure before changing
"My skin is dull" is not data. Rate these five criteria from 0 to 3, in the morning, before any treatment, in front of a window.
| Criterion | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light (cheekbone) | No reflection | Weak reflection | Clear reflection | Frankly luminous |
| Comfort (10 min after cleansing) | Clear tightness | Slight discomfort | Neutral | Immediate suppleness |
| Texture (with finger, cheek) | Rough | Irregular | Quite smooth | Smooth and even |
| Evenness of complexion | Pronounced contrasts | Visible areas | Slight variations | Homogeneous |
| Longevity at the end of the day | Dull by 4 PM | Visible fatigue | Stable | Fresh until evening |
Score out of 15, dated, to be redone on D14 and D28. Below 2 points difference, the variation is not significant. Less than 6: remove before adding. From 6 to 10: reinforce hydration, one active ingredient. Above 11: maintain without overloading.
Age, renewal, collagen: what is fact
Cell renewal, often summarized as 28 days in young adults, slows down by 30 to 50% between the third and eighth decade (Farage et al., 2013): cells remain longer on the surface and light disperses. In parallel, dermal collagen production decreases—a physiological fact, not a promise. No topically applied treatment can claim to rebuild this structure, and European regulations strictly govern such claims. Marine collagen, too voluminous to cross the skin barrier, plays a film-forming and moisturizing role, useful for immediate appearance, nothing more.
Only one field data is referenced: in the Nambour randomized trial, adults who applied sunscreen daily showed approximately 24% fewer visible signs of skin aging after 4.5 years (Hughes et al., 2013).
Active ingredient comparison
Typical ranges, and especially the time before judging — data missing from packaging.
| Active ingredient | Typical dosage | Time | Starting frequency | Time to judge | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vitamin C | 5 to 15% | Morning, before cream | Every other morning | 8 to 12 weeks | Oxidizes: a serum that has turned dark orange is no longer useful |
| Niacinamide | 2 to 5% | Morning or evening | Once a day | 6 to 8 weeks | No need to combine two products containing it |
| Hyaluronic acid | 0.1 to 2% | Morning and evening, damp skin | Twice a day | 3 to 7 days | Without cream on top in dry air, the effect reverses |
| Glycolic or lactic acid | 4 to 10% | Evening only | Once a week in the evening | 4 to 6 weeks | Increases sun sensitivity: SPF is non-negotiable |
| Green tea | 0.5 to 5% extract | Morning | Once a day | 6 to 10 weeks | Background active: do not expect spectacular results |
| Prickly pear seed oil | Pure, as a finishing step | Evening, last layer | 3 to 4 drops, 3 evenings a week | 2 to 3 weeks | Does not replace hydration or sun protection |
Only one works in less than a week: hyaluronic acid, which affects surface water and thus reflection. Vitamin C, described as a cofactor for collagen synthesis enzymes and as an antioxidant (Pullar et al., 2017), justifies its presence in formulas—not a promise of reconstruction.
The 28-day protocol
Only one new parameter per week, to be able to attribute what is observed.
Days 1 to 7 — remove
- No acids, no exfoliants, no "detox" masks.
- Morning: rinse or very gentle cleanser, cream, sunscreen.
- Evening: single cleanse, 60 seconds, with lukewarm water.
- Hydrating serum morning and evening on damp skin, cream within 60 seconds.
Days 8 to 14 — one active ingredient
- Vitamin C in the morning if complexion uniformity is the priority; niacinamide if the skin is reactive.
- Every other day, before cream. Perform a 48-hour tolerance test beforehand, under the jawline.
- Nothing else changes. Measure index on Day 14.
Days 15 to 21 — evening nourishment
- Three evenings (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday): 3 to 4 drops of prickly pear oil warmed for 5 seconds between palms, as the last layer, pressed into the skin for 30 seconds.
- Other evenings, cream only: we want to be able to compare.
Days 22 to 28 — one exfoliation, just one
- One evening during the week, on dry skin, without rubbing. On that evening: no active ingredients, no oil.
- Mandatory sun protection the next morning.
- If tingling lasts beyond two minutes: skip this step. Final measurement on Day 28.
A gain of 2 to 4 points in 28 days is a good result: continue for two months without adding anything. A stable score points towards lifestyle or sun exposure; a declining score indicates overload.
Adjust according to your profile
| Profile | Common origin | Protocol adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Dry | Lack of lipids, rough texture | Oil from week 2; exfoliation every 10 days |
| Oily | Dehydration masked by shine | Fluid textures, niacinamide, no harsh approach |
| Combination | Two conditions on the same face | Modulate by zone: rich cream on cheeks |
| Sensitive | Overloaded routine | Stay in phase 1 for 3 weeks; exfoliation removed |
| Mature | Slowed renewal, established wrinkles | Same logic applied over 3 months instead of 4 weeks |
Prickly pear seed oil remains a finishing product, never a moisturizer or sunscreen: it doesn't provide water, it helps retain it. Too much will leave a greasy film – the opposite of the desired result.
The real cost of a facial treatment
The listed price says nothing about the real cost: only the price per day matters.
| Treatment | Dose | Applications for 30 ml | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serum | ≈ 0.5 ml (4 to 5 drops) | ≈ 60 | Twice a day: 1 month |
| Finishing oil | ≈ 0.15 ml (3 to 4 drops) | ≈ 200 | 3 evenings a week: approximately 15 months |
| Cream (50 ml jar) | ≈ 1 ml | ≈ 50 for 50 ml | Twice a day: less than a month |
An expensive oil initially often ends up being cheaper per day than an entry-level cream. Do this calculation before your next purchase: a seemingly expensive bottle can cost just a few cents per evening, while an "affordable" cream is empty in less than a month.
Mistakes that perpetuate dull complexion
- Exfoliating more because the face looks dull: the most common spiral.
- Confusing hydration and nourishment: applying oil to dehydrated skin.
- Judging an active ingredient after ten days when the chart indicates eight weeks.
- Stopping sun protection in October.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a complexion to regain its radiance?
Depending on the cause: 3 to 7 days for dehydration, 3 to 6 months of SPF for uniformity, 8 to 12 weeks to evaluate Vitamin C.
Should I exfoliate more?
No. 1 to 2 times a week maximum: beyond that, the skin barrier weakens and the result reverses.
Does marine collagen in cream make a difference?
It acts on the surface, forming a film and moisturizing. No skincare product can claim to affect the body's collagen production.

Key benchmarks
Express Glossary
- Dull complexion
- Greyish appearance of a face whose surface scatters light instead of reflecting it. Neither a disease nor a defect: a state of appearance whose evolution depends on the cause (timelines detailed in the table "Six causes, six timescales").
- NOPAL Radiance Index
- Self-observation grid with 5 criteria rated from 0 to 3 (light, comfort, texture, uniformity, hold), to be redone on D14 and D28. Significance threshold: 2 points.
To remember
- Only hyaluronic acid is judged in 3 to 7 days; vitamin C requires 8 to 12 weeks.
- One most often gains luminosity by removing an excess rather than by adding a product.
- The 28-day protocol introduces only one parameter per week, including prickly pear oil (3 to 4 drops).
