Vitamin C or aloe vera: which one for your skin?

They address two different needs. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that works on skin tone uniformity over several months. Aloe vera gel hydrates and soothes upon application. If your complexion lacks radiance, use vitamin C. If your skin feels hot or tight, use aloe.

Two profiles, two uses

Criterion Vitamin C Aloe vera
Role Antioxidant, skin tone uniformity Immediate hydration, soothing
Timeline 6 to 12 weeks Immediate
Stability Fragile, oxidizes in air and light Stable
Tolerance Variable depending on form and concentration Excellent if the formula is short
Time of day Preferably in the morning Morning and evening
Texture Serum Fresh, non-greasy gel

What Vitamin C does

As an antioxidant, it helps neutralize free radicals produced by sun exposure and pollution. It is also studied for its role as a cofactor in collagen synthesis, which explains its place in skincare products for skin lacking firmness.

Its challenge is preservation. L-ascorbic acid, its most documented form, oxidizes quickly: a serum that has turned orange has lost some of its value. An opaque bottle and a tightly sealed cap make a big difference.

What Aloe Vera does

Aloe gel is composed mainly of water, retained on the surface by its polysaccharides. Its effect is felt immediately, especially on heated skin.

It does not work on complexion. A dull complexion due to lack of water will regain luminosity with aloe; an uneven complexion marked by spots requires vitamin C and daily sun protection.

The combination, which works well

The synergy lies in complementarity: aloe provides water, while vitamin C works deeply on oxidative stress.

1. Aloe vera gel on clean skin, in a thin layer. Wait one to two minutes.

2. Vitamin C serum.

3. A cream or oil to seal, then sun protection if it's morning.

This combination is also comfortable: skin that finds vitamin C prickly at first tolerates its application much better on skin prepared with aloe.

In what order to introduce them

Start with aloe vera if your skin is reactive: excellent tolerance, no habituation needed. Add vitamin C three to four weeks later, at 5 or 10%, every other morning.

Introducing both at the same time makes it impossible to attribute a reaction to one rather than the other.

Protecting skin from sun and pollution

Vitamin C is rich in antioxidant properties: it helps neutralize compounds responsible for oxidative stress, caused by exposure and urban pollution. It is also for this reason that it stimulates the production of collagen, a protein essential for firmness.

Aloe vera acts differently. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, it provides water and comfort. Its benefits are felt after exposure, but it does not protect from the sun: only sun protection does, once or twice a day depending on exposure.

Realistic daily use

A natural routine is effective if it's simple. Aloe vera gel can be applied morning and evening. The antioxidant serum, on the other hand, is used in the morning, when its protective role makes the most sense. Combining the two active ingredients takes no more than two minutes.

Known limitations

Neither replaces sun protection, which remains crucial for long-term skin tone uniformity. These products are cosmetic treatments: their role is limited to comfort and appearance. A spot that changes shape or color requires medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can vitamin C be applied over aloe gel?

Yes, and it's often more comfortable. Aloe prepares the skin and reduces the tingling sensation during the first few days. Wait one to two minutes between applications.

Does aloe vera contain vitamin C?

In negligible amounts for cosmetic use. The two are not interchangeable: one hydrates, the other acts as an antioxidant.

How do I know if my vitamin C serum is still good?

By its color. A serum that has turned orange or brown has oxidized and lost some of its value. An opaque and well-sealed bottle significantly slows down this phenomenon.

Which is better for sensitive skin?

Aloe vera, which has excellent tolerance provided you choose a gel without fragrance or alcohol. Vitamin C requires gradual introduction.

Correct, or soothe

These two do not aim for the same result. For uneven skin tone and past marks, vitamin C has the best level of evidence: our vitamin C serum fills this role, in the morning, under sun protection. Aloe vera remains the choice for skin that cannot tolerate it.
