Niacinamide or glycerin: which one for your skin?

One works on function, the other on water. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that acts on the skin barrier, shine, and evenness of complexion. Glycerin is a humectant: it attracts and retains water, without correcting anything.

What sets them apart

Criterion Niacinamide Glycerin
Nature active, vitamin B3 humectant
Action barrier, shine, complexion attracts and retains water
Timeline 6 to 8 weeks immediate
Useful concentration 2 to 5 % 3 to 10 %
Presence dedicated serums almost all creams
Tolerance good, possible redness at first excellent

What niacinamide does

It is one of the most well-documented active ingredients in common cosmetics. It strengthens the skin barrier, resulting in skin that loses less water and better withstands aggressions.

Niacinamide also acts on sebum production, which helps limit shine, and on complexion evenness. Two to five percent is enough: beyond that, the gain is not proven.

Its drawback is its slowness. Allow six to eight weeks of daily use before judging.

What glycerin does

It attracts water to the upper layers and retains it. It is the most used humectant in all cosmetics, and one of the best studied.

It provides no substance and corrects nothing: neither complexion, nor shine, nor barrier function. Its effectiveness on water content, however, is immediate and reliable.

Which to choose

Shiny skin, prominent pores, uneven complexion: niacinamide, the only one of the two to act on these points.

Tight skin: glycerin, or more simply a properly formulated cream that contains it.

In reality: you are already using glycerin without knowing it. Check your cream before buying anything.

Why they complement each other

Niacinamide improves the skin's ability to retain water; glycerin provides that water. One works on the container, the other on the content.

Many niacinamide serums also contain glycerin in their formula. The combination is often already made without you having chosen it.

Using them together

Both are water-soluble and are placed early in the routine. Apply niacinamide serum to clean skin, then the cream containing glycerin.

Finish with a rich layer if your skin still feels tight, and with a sunscreen in the morning.

The drawback of glycerin

Applied pure or highly concentrated in very dry air, it can draw water from the skin instead of providing it. In a formula dosed between three and ten percent, this risk does not arise.

The constant solution is to apply to damp skin, and always seal with a cream or oil.

Before starting niacinamide

It sometimes causes a slight warming sensation in the first few days. Introduce it every other night for a week, then switch to daily if all goes well.

Glycerin, on the other hand, requires no precautions. You can use it from day one, at any frequency.

Niacinamide on shiny skin

This is its clearest field. Niacinamide acts on sebum production, which helps limit shine and refines skin texture over six to eight weeks.

Glycerin has no action on this point. It hydrates, which is still useful for oily skin — many of them lack water without lacking sebum.

A simple routine with both

Gentle cleansing, niacinamide serum on damp skin, cream containing glycerin, sunscreen in the morning. Four steps are enough.

Niacinamide works on the underlying issues, glycerin on immediate comfort. Neither replaces the final occlusive layer on dry skin.

Concentrations that matter

Two to five percent niacinamide: this is the range where its effectiveness is established. Formulas with ten percent do not perform better and cause more redness.

Three to ten percent glycerin in a formula. Below that, the effect is weak; above, the texture becomes sticky without added benefit.

How long to judge

Glycerin is judged on the first application: comfort is there or it isn't. Niacinamide requires six to eight weeks of daily use.

This difference explains many abandonments: niacinamide serum is judged on the timeline of cream, and people give up before it has produced any results.

What you need to know

These ingredients are cosmetic: they act on the appearance and comfort of the skin, without treating any condition. Redness that persists beyond two weeks requires dermatological advice.
