The eyelid skin is among the thinnest on the face. Therefore, blood vessels and the orbicularis muscle can show through more easily. With age, loss of support accentuates the transition between the eyelid and cheek.
Sleep, Fatigue, and Dehydration: Real but Variable Effects
A short night can accentuate overall paleness, congestion, and puffiness, which enhances the contrast under the eyes. It doesn't necessarily create permanent pigmentation in one night. Several days of recovery can reduce the vascular component without erasing an anatomical hollow.
Dehydration sometimes makes shadows more visible because the skin appears less supple. Drink normally according to your thirst and apply a humectant treatment. Excessive water consumption does not permanently fill the tear trough.
Allergies, Rubbing, and Sun Exposure
Repeated rubbing due to eye or nasal discomfort can accentuate pigmentation. The sun also stimulates melanocytes, particularly in olive and darker skin tones. Sunglasses, a tolerated SPF, and stopping rubbing are more useful than aggressive exfoliation.

Puffiness and Dark Circles: Don't Confuse Volume and Color
Puffiness creates a bulge and an underlying shadow. Cold can temporarily reduce swelling, but it doesn't change an established fat pad. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can limit morning retention in some people.

Blood Circulation, the Central Mechanism of Blue Dark Circles
This is the most common cause, and the one that is most poorly explained.
Under the lower eyelid runs a dense network of superficial blood vessels. The skin covering them is about 0.5 millimeters thick — four to five times thinner than on the cheek — and contains almost no subcutaneous fat. These vessels are therefore visible through transparency.
Venous blood, poor in oxygen, is darker than arterial blood. Seen through thin skin, it does not appear red but bluish or purplish — an optical effect, the same one that makes the veins on the forearm appear blue.
Poor local blood circulation aggravates the phenomenon: when venous return slows down, blood stagnates, vessels dilate, and the appearance of dark circles becomes more pronounced. This explains why they are more noticeable upon waking, after a night spent lying flat, and why they fade within an hour of getting up.
Several factors slow down this venous return: prolonged lying down, fatigue, tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption the night before, and cold, which contracts then dilates the vessels.
This mechanism also explains why locally applied cold works: it causes vasoconstriction that temporarily reduces the caliber of the vessels and the intensity of the coloration. The effect is real, immediate, and lasts one to two hours.
Lifestyle: What Really Works, and To What Extent
Plenty of advice circulates on this topic. Here are the ones whose effects are consistent with the mechanism described above.
Sleep matters, but not as commonly believed: sleeping more does not lighten a pigmented dark circle or fill a hollow one. It acts on the vascular component, by improving venous return and reducing retention. Seven to nine regular hours do more than an isolated long night.
Sleep position has a measurable effect: slightly elevating the head with an extra pillow limits nocturnal stagnation. It's a free gesture whose results are visible upon waking.
Reducing salt intake acts on puffiness rather than color, by limiting water retention in the fatty compartment.
Quitting smoking demonstrably improves cutaneous microcirculation, and not just around the eyes.
However, a good lifestyle will not make hereditary or morphological dark circles disappear. It reduces the aggravated portion, which can represent a third of the visible intensity — enough to be seen, not enough to explain everything.
And a point to dismiss: drinking more water than necessary changes nothing for a properly hydrated person. Only actual dehydration hollows the gaze.

Reducing Dark Circles: What Works According to Type
Since there are three distinct mechanisms, there isn't a single treatment. Identifying your type of dark circle determines what can work — and avoids buying a product designed for a different problem for months.
For blue dark circles, of vascular origin, cold and caffeine act by vasoconstriction. The effect is temporary but reliable, and can be repeated every morning. Vitamin K and certain venotonic extracts are proposed for this indication with more limited data.
For brown dark circles, which are due to hyperpigmentation, depigmenting active ingredients are the only relevant ones: niacinamide, vitamin C, azelaic acid, arbutin. The delay is measured in months, never days, and daily sun protection is a prerequisite for all results — without it, you maintain what you're trying to reduce.
For hollow dark circles, no cosmetic treatment can fill a missing volume. What improves the appearance is optical: a concealer with a luminous finish, or in a medical office, an injection of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. This is the only one of the three types where aesthetic treatments have a clear advantage.
A common point for all three: none of the above permanently eliminates the appearance of dark circles. We reduce an intensity; we don't change anatomy.
And a common mistake to avoid: layering four different eye contour treatments. On 0.5 millimeter skin, layering active ingredients more often causes irritation — which darkens the area — than an improvement.
When a Rapid Change Warrants Evaluation
A dark circle that has been present for years and is symmetrical is different from sudden swelling on only one side. Consult a doctor in case of pain, significant redness, visual disturbance, rapid swelling, or involvement of only one eye. These signs are not amenable to simple cosmetic treatment.

Salt, alcohol, and a very short night can accentuate morning swelling in some people. Compare several mornings before drawing conclusions. A single photograph is not enough to identify a trigger.

Avoid promises of disappearance in seven days and photos with different frontal lighting. Measure color and swelling at the same time, without concealer. Realistic improvement is often partial and depends on the dominant mechanism.
