- Unsaponifiable — fraction of a pressed plant that does not turn into soap: sterols, tocopherols, carotenoids. Often the most interesting part from a cosmetic perspective.
- Comedogenic index — indicative scale from 0 to 5 estimating the tendency of a fatty substance to clog pores. Useful benchmark, but derived from old protocols: to be considered as an order of magnitude.
- Furocoumarins — family of compounds naturally present in certain seeds, reactive to light. Their elimination during purification is a mark of a supplier's seriousness.
- PAO — the small open jar symbol printed on the packaging, followed by a number of months: recommended period of use after opening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can bakuchiol completely replace retinol?
Based on the criteria measured in the 2019 trial—fine lines and wrinkles, complexion uniformity—the results are comparable at an equal concentration of 0.5%. However, the long-term data is still very unequal: 44 volunteers followed for three months on one side, several decades of literature on the other. It is a credible botanical option, particularly relevant for those who have never tolerated the adaptation phase to retinoids. It is not yet a documented identical replacement.
How do I switch from my current skincare?
In four weeks, without interruption: two applications of each the first week, one retinoid application versus three botanical applications the second week, then every other day with botanical alone the third week, and finally every evening from day 22. Can it be applied in the morning?
Yes. Unlike retinoids, it does not make the skin more sensitive to light, which allows for use both morning and evening—typically 2 drops in the morning and 3 in the evening. Sun protection is still recommended in all cases, regardless of the product used.
What concentration should I choose to start with?
0.5% is the reasonable entry point for the vast majority of skin types, including reactive ones. You can increase to 1% after four to six weeks if tolerance is perfect. Beyond 1%, the additional benefit is not documented, and discomfort increases.
How long does it take to see results?
Skin texture is usually the first criterion to change, around day 28. The appearance of fine lines requires more patience: studies show results after three months, and our protocol sets the judgment point at day 56 precisely to avoid premature evaluation. Take photos, don't rely on your memory.
Can it be combined with hyaluronic acid?
Yes, and it's one of the most comfortable combinations. The humectant is applied first on damp skin, then the concentrate, waiting about 60 seconds before the next layer. The two do not interfere, and the addition of hydration makes the introduction smoother.
Can it be applied around the eyes?
Yes, with a product formulated for this area, at a lower dosage — typically 0.1% to 0.5%. Apply by gently tapping with your ring finger on the orbital bone, never directly on the lash line. A fluid dosed at 1% is not suitable for this area.
Purified molecule or babchi extract: what's the difference?
The first is an isolated molecule whose titer is known, and therefore its exact concentration in the finished product; this is what was used in studies. The second is a complete plant extract, whose actual richness is not clear and which may contain furanocoumarins if purification has been neglected. On the packaging, look for the mention of the isolated molecule rather than just "Psoralea Corylifolia Seed Extract".
Is an organic certified product necessarily higher dosed?
No, and this is the most common confusion. Certification relates to the agricultural production method and the overall composition of the formula, not to the concentration of the active ingredient. A certified formula may contain only 0.1%, while a non-certified formula may contain 1%. The two criteria should be read separately.
Bakuchiol or prickly pear seed oil: do you have to choose?
The question is badly phrased; they are not competitors. Bakuchiol is an active ingredient targeting the appearance of signs of aging, dosed by percentage. Prickly pear seed oil is a nourishing fatty oil, rich in tocopherols, which provides comfort and a refined finish. In a well-constructed evening routine, the concentrate goes first (3 drops) and the oil seals last (2 drops). The two complement each other.
