Combine salicylic acid and squalane: deep cleansing without drying

An acid that loves fat, and a lipid that repairs what it removes. Salicylic acid is the only exfoliant to work inside the pore; squalane is what makes the operation bearable.

Why this acid penetrates sebum

It is a beta-hydroxy acid, and its molecule is lipophilic — it dissolves in fats. The consequence is direct: where alpha-hydroxy acids remain on the surface, this one penetrates the follicle and acts on its content.

It is used at 0.5 to 2% in facial care. Beyond that, we enter the realm of professional preparations. A 1% tonic used daily does more than a 2% serum used once a week.

What squalane compensates for

This lipid reproduces a component of the human hydrolipidic film. Its source is now vegetable, olive or sugar cane, and the molecule obtained is identical to that which was once extracted from animal sources.

Its role here is simple: to restore to the surface what the acid removes. It is stable, odorless, non-comedogenic, and can be applied to oily skin without weighing it down — three qualities that make it difficult to replace in this area.

The order and the rhythm

Acid on clean, dry skin, in the evening. Twenty minutes of waiting. Then two drops of squalane, or a light moisturizing texture containing it. On non-acid evenings, squalane alone.

Two weekly applications to start, then daily if the skin tolerates it. For sensitive skin, start with one application every ten days — the final rhythm will be the same, the path will be longer.

For which skin type

Oily and combination skin: this is the reference combination. Blemish-prone skin: it is suitable, locally or over the entire face depending on the extent. Dry skin: salicylic acid is not the right choice, a lactic acid will respond better.

On skin that shines without being blemish-prone, squalane alone is often sufficient. Adding an acid to skin that doesn't need it creates a problem where there wasn't one.

Frequent mistakes

Combining with another acid or a retinoid on the same evening. Increasing the concentration before tolerance is established. Skipping the moisturizing step, thinking that oily skin doesn't need it — this is precisely what triggers the apparent overproduction of shine.

Sun protection accompanies all exfoliation. Our fact sheets on salicylic acid and vegetable squalane detail the concentrations.

In the catalog

The purifying tonic with salicylic acid carries the active part at a concentration compatible with daily use, and the light moisturizing gel with hyaluronic acid provides the moisturizing step without fatty substances for skins that reject them.

What happens in the pore

The follicle contains sebum, dead cells, and keratin. When this mixture accumulates, it forms a plug that water does not dissolve. A water-soluble active ingredient remains at the entrance; salicylic acid, however, penetrates because it dissolves in fat.

Once inside, it breaks down the bonds between cells and the content is gradually released. This is not spectacular and takes several weeks, but it is the only cosmetic mechanism that acts in this area.

What squalane restores to the barrier

An exfoliant removes part of the surface film. Squalane is naturally present in this film, which allows it to reinsert itself instead of layering. The skin barrier regains its impermeability, and the skin stops compensating.

This is a soothing effect obtained through a mechanical pathway: less water loss, therefore less discomfort. It is felt in a few days, whereas the acid takes weeks to show its work.

Available formulations

Salicylic acid is found in tonics, serums, creams, and local treatments. The form changes the use more than the effect: a tonic is used every day, a serum two to three times a week, a local treatment occasionally.

Vegetable squalane is found pure, in a bottle, or in a cream or gel. In its pure form, it is odorless, colorless, and keeps very well — it is one of the few cosmetic fats that does not go rancid.

On marks left by imperfections

Red marks fade on their own in a few months. Brown marks take longer and a dedicated active ingredient. Salicylic acid acts on what produces them, not on those that are already there.

Sun protection is what prevents the latter from intensifying. This is the most important gesture in this area, and it is more effective than any corrective active ingredient.

Allow time, and know when to stop

Three to six weeks to judge. If the skin feels tight, peels, or reddens, it is better to space out rather than stop: the rhythm is almost always the cause before the formula. Resuming at one application every five days resolves most cases.

Cosmetics address ordinary cases. For extensive, painful, or persistent imperfections, the advice of a healthcare professional is essential and irreplaceable.
