Aloe vera or ceramides: which one for your skin?

They both address uncomfortable skin, but one soothes and the other repairs. Aloe vera gel instantly soothes by providing hydration. Ceramides replenish the lipid cement whose deficiency causes discomfort. One treats the symptom, the other the cause.

The essential difference

Skin that feels tight within a minute of rinsing almost always suffers from an overly permeable barrier. Water escapes, irritants enter, and the sensation returns as soon as the relief wears off.

An aqueous gel truly soothes for twenty or thirty minutes. Ceramides, on the other hand, fill the deficit over two to four weeks and eliminate the mechanism itself. This is a difference in nature, not degree.

What aloe vera gel contains

More than 98% water, polysaccharides that form a light film, a few vitamins and minerals in quantities too small to be effective. Its reputation is richer than its analysis.

This does not disqualify it: soothing heated skin is useful, and it does it well. You just need to know what you are buying.

What ceramides are

Lipids naturally present in the stratum corneum, where they form almost half of the intercellular cement, alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids.

When applied, they fill this deficit where it is located, on the surface. The effect is not immediately visible: it is measured by skin that reacts less, over two to four weeks.

Which to choose, and in what order

Skin heated after sun or cold: aloe vera gel, for immediate soothing.

Skin that feels tight every day: ceramides, which tackle the cause.

Both at once: the gel for immediate relief, a ceramide cream as a long-term treatment.

Using them together

There's no objection, and the order is simple: aloe vera gel in the aqueous phase, ceramide cream over it.

It's even a good combination for very reactive skin: aloe soothes while ceramides rebuild. The first provides patience, the second works.

How to read a ceramide formula

Look for several types combined with cholesterol and a fatty substance: this trio is better documented than ceramides alone. Their position in the ingredient list matters more than the claim on the packaging.

For aloe vera gel, the juice or gel should be at the top of the list, not water followed by reconstituted powder.

A safety point

The outer layer of the aloe leaf contains aloin, an irritant, which cosmetic-grade gels remove. Applying a cut leaf at home exposes you to this substance — and that's precisely the opposite of the desired effect on sensitive skin.

How long to judge

Aloe vera gel can be judged in a few minutes: it either soothes or it doesn't. Ceramides are judged over a month, which requires patience and not changing anything else in the meantime.

Skin that remains uncomfortable after four weeks of ceramides raises a different question than that of the product.

What you need to know

These are cosmetic treatments. They improve the comfort and appearance of the skin, without treating skin conditions. Skin that flakes, itches, or stays red for a long time requires dermatological advice.
