Hyaluronic Acid or Argan Oil: Which one for your skin?

They don't address the same deficiency. Hyaluronic acid addresses a lack of water; argan oil addresses a lack of fatty substances. A skin can lack one, the other, or both — and it is this diagnosis that guides the choice, much more than the ingredient's reputation.

Hydration or nutrition: the distinction that decides

Dehydrated skin lacks water. It feels tight after cleansing, shows fine lines at the end of the day, and these lines fade after a good night's sleep. Oily skin can be dehydrated: the two concepts are independent.

Dry skin lacks lipids. It feels rough to the touch, the texture appears uneven, and no amount of water changes much if nothing retains it.

The first case calls for a humectant. The second calls for a fatty substance. Confusing the two explains most routines that disappoint.

The distinguishing table

Criterion Hyaluronic Acid Argan Oil
Nature humectant, aqueous phase vegetable oil, oil phase
Routine placement beginning, after cleansing end, before or instead of cream
Fills a lack of water a lack of fatty substances
Perceived effect a few days, plumping effect immediate on comfort
Skin types all dry and mature especially
Texture fluid, non-greasy enveloping, noticeable finish

What hyaluronic acid does

It's a molecule that the skin produces itself, and its quantity decreases with age. Applied as a serum, it retains water in the upper layers and produces that plumped effect visible from the first few days.

Its effectiveness entirely depends on one action: it must be sealed. Applied alone in dry air, it can draw moisture from deeper layers and accentuate tightness. On slightly damp skin, covered with a cream or oil, it gives its full effect.

What argan oil does

Rich in oleic acid and vitamin E, it nourishes and limits evaporation. Its texture is more enveloping than that of other vegetable oils, which makes it suitable for dry and mature skin, where it supports elasticity and suppleness.

It does not provide water. Used alone on dehydrated skin, it improves comfort without treating the cause — that's the limit of all oils.

Which to choose according to skin types

Dehydrated oily skin: the humectant, with a light gel cream. Oil is not necessary.

Dry skin: oil is essential, the humectant usefully complements it.

Mature skin: both. Water loss and lipid loss often occur together.

Reactive skin: start with the aqueous serum, which is better tolerated, and add the oil after two weeks.

On sensitive skin, hyaluronic acid is almost always fine; argan oil requires a patch test in the crook of the elbow, like any unrefined vegetable oil. However, its essential fatty acids make it one of the best tolerated.

On oily skin, jojoba oil is often a better choice than argan, which is richer. And in all cases, avoid adding essential oils to these preparations to "strengthen" them: this is the primary cause of reactions on an already stressed skin barrier.

Layering them, the most frequent answer

The order is dictated by physics: aqueous before oily.

1. Hyaluronic acid serum on slightly damp skin.

2. One minute wait.

3. Two to three drops of argan oil, by pressing rather than massaging.

The fatty substance here perfectly fulfills the role that the humectant requires: to seal. Without this step, the serum loses most of its benefit.

A complete facial routine

In the morning: gentle cleansing, aqueous serum, light cream, then sun protection. Oil is generally reserved for the evening, as its texture doesn't blend as well under makeup.

In the evening: cleansing, serum, oil. For very dry skin in winter, a cream can be added two minutes after the oil.

On wrinkles and regeneration

Neither of them erases established wrinkles. The humectant attenuates dehydration lines, which are reversible. The oil supports suppleness and comfort, which improves the general appearance without changing the structure.

The most effective anti-aging treatments remain daily sun protection and consistency. A serum applied for three consecutive months does more than an ambitious formula used for two weeks.

Storage and quantities

The aqueous serum stores easily. Argan oil, rich in unsaturates, requires an opaque bottle and a cool place; a rancid odor indicates an oil that should no longer be applied to the face.

Three to four drops of serum, two to three drops of oil. Beyond that, the excess remains on the surface without benefit.

Effectiveness, regeneration, and skin texture beauty

The most effective treatments are not the most concentrated but the most regularly applied. On the driest skin types, skin texture regeneration is observed after four to six weeks: the skin reflects less light, makeup lasts longer.

On the face, the effects are first felt to the touch, then seen. This is a good benchmark for judging a routine: more supple skin always precedes more beautiful skin.

How to apply them according to the areas

The eye contour, cheeks, and perimeter of the face do not have the same needs as the median area. There is no obligation to treat the entire face in the same way: a fatty substance on areas that feel tight, a serum alone elsewhere, is often the most appropriate formula.

This zone-based approach is particularly suitable for combination skin, which fails with uniform routines and succeeds with adapted routines.

Limitations

These are cosmetics, whose action focuses on the appearance and comfort of the skin, without curative aims. Skin that remains uncomfortable despite an adapted routine deserves a dermatological opinion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are both useful in the same routine?

Yes, and it's often the best choice. Aqueous serum first on damp skin, then oil to seal. The reverse order does not work.

Does argan oil hydrate?

Not directly: it does not provide water. It nourishes and limits evaporation, which indirectly improves hydration.

Which one to choose for oily skin?

The aqueous serum, with a gel cream. Argan oil is more intended for dry skin; reserve it for areas that feel tight if you wish.

How many drops of oil for the face?

Two to three are sufficient. Beyond that, the excess remains on the surface and gives a greasy feeling without additional benefit.
